Why learn Azerbaijani?

Azerbaijani is spoken by over 30 million people in the world, mainly in Azerbaijan, the ‘Land of Fire’, but also in various other countries including Iran, Russia and Turkey.

Learning Azerbaijani is easy, and it will make your visit to the Azerbaijan – where few residents outside of the capital city of Baku communicate fluently in English – a more rewarding experience. Baku is an ancient city with a very modern look, and sits on the Caspian Sea. For those working or studying with an interest in the oil and gas industry, Azerbaijan has vast deposits of natural gas and oil and a big industry build around this.

Interesting facts about Azerbaijani

  • There is no gender: instead of ‘he’, ‘she’ and ‘it’, Azerbaijani has one word for all three: “O”.
  • The verb ‘to have’ does not exist. When Azerbaijani speakers want to express possession of an object, they say: ‘the object exists’.
  • Azerbaijani uses suffixes attached to the end of words, instead of prepositions and articles. For example: the preposition ‘in’ is “da”, and the word for ‘room’ is “otaq”, but the phrase ‘in the room’ is “otaqda”.
