German - Deutsch

Why learn German?

A total of 132 million people in the world speak German in 13 different countries, and a hundred million speak German as their first language. One of the main reasons often cited to study German is that Germany has had a thriving economy for years, offering very good career opportunities.

Learning German can be the best investment you make to improve your employment prospects. But German is also the language of authors Goethe, Kafka and composers Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, and studying German will give you access to a rich cultural heritage. Plus, if you are a speaker of English, you will find German much easier than is usually believed, because the two languages share the same Germanic root.

Are there any words I might recognise?

You’ll probably have heard of German words used in English, like “Autobahn” (‘motorway’), or “Delicatessen”, “Doppelgänger”, “kitsch”, “Fest”. Also the English word ‘pretzel’, the distinctively shaped bread, comes from German “Bretzel”: interestingly, this comes in two versions, a hard and a soft Bretzel … and who knew a German snack could have such linguistic similarities with the terminology of 2018 British politics!
