Bulgarian

Why learn Bulgarian?

Bulgaria is a country of extraordinary, contrasting sceneries: spectacular mountains, beautiful sandy beaches, quaint villages and warm hospitality.  If you are planning a visit, though, acquiring some knowledge of Bulgarian would make your experience even more rewarding.

Bulgarian is the oldest written Slavic language, and its Cyrillic alphabet, shared by over a dozen other national languages including Russian, Serbian and Belarusian, was invented in Bulgaria itself in the 9thcentury AD. About nine million people speak Bulgarian, which became one of the official languages of the European Union in 2007.

Are there any words I might recognise?

If you don’t know the Cyrillic alphabet, the answer is probably: Not really… But the good news is that learning the alphabet is relatively easy! As soon as you know the alphabet, you’ll not only be able to read street and shop signs in both Bulgaria and many other countries which share the Cyrillic alphabet, but also you will know how to pronounce the new words you come across, because most words sound “as they are written”.
