The Projects

C-DaRE is always keen to hear from prospective self-funding PhD candidates, particularly those working in the following areas.

  • the nature of the moving body and the implications of technology for dance transmission
  • Somatic practices applied in health, education and creative fields
  • that investigate how dance (or from within the broader field of performing arts) can contribute to experiments in the realm of the post-human in relation to the respective theories 
  • that examine the choices artists make in terms of composition, environment & duration when working with motion capture and related technologies to explore new questions about embodied human expression and communication
  • explore whether the current legal framework for ICH can accommodate and support contemporary forms of ICH and to consider the place of dance within this framework; and the as to the interface between these contemporary forms of ICH and copyright.
  • seeking to investigate how dance can contribute to already existing discussions about the mediation and understanding of extreme events and experiences
  • that investigate existing databases, the building of new databases and other starting points as a premise for exploring the potential for an emergent dance scholarship using digital methods.

The Live Legacy of Siobhan Davies: An Archaeology of Choreographic Practice

This PhD project aims to contribute to and support a new process of examining and articulating the artistic legacy of choreographer Siobhan Davies. Davies’ career as a choreographer spans 50 years; she has evolved the context and character of her work to challenge and expand landscapes, both physical and intellectual, for contemporary dance. Davies established the ground-breaking RePlay online archive for her practice in collaboration with Coventry University in 2007. A decade on, she intends to focus the next four years of her practice on a detailed re-examination of her past work, including key ideas, questions and working methods, to imaginatively reconfigure it in ways that will generate unexpected new knowledge for herself and others.

The student will work closely alongside Davies and Siobhan Davies Dance staff to conduct an ‘archaeology’ of her practice, examining certain key works in detail to recoup and re-evaluate the ideas within them, the ways they were made in collaboration with others, and the artistic and social context they occupied. Together they will imagine and create new ways of communicating the nature and concerns of Davies' evolving practice, creating sites for future encounters with the body of practice through new artworks, film, dialogue and digital resources. This work will need to be situated within the current context of significant choreographers establishing their legacies and archives, but will also look beyond dance for other methods to account for complex cultural histories and stories.

About the Centre/Department

The Centre for Dance Research (C-DaRE) brings together artists and scholars, working collaboratively with partners from across the creative and cultural industries for interdisciplinary research and knowledge exchange.

The Centre specialises in an inclusive approach to diverse forms of artistic research in dance, supported by new approaches to documentation, analysis and augmentation of choreographic creativity. C-DaRE projects are funded by the AHRC, Leverhulme Trust, European Commission, HEA and the Digital Catapult. The successful candidate will join a large team of researchers and PhD students who have many contacts with dance artists and companies, in the UK and worldwide.

Successful Applicants

Successful Applicants will have:

  • A minimum of a 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline/subject area with a minimum 60% mark in the Project element or equivalent with a minimum 60% overall module average.
  • In the event of a first degree classification of less than 2:1, a Masters Degree in a relevant subject area will be considered as an equivalent. The Masters must have been attained with overall marks at minimum merit level (60%). In addition, the dissertation or equivalent element in the Masters must also have been attained with a mark at minimum merit level (60%).


  • the potential to engage in innovative research and to complete the PhD within the defined period of study
  • a minimum of English language proficiency (IELTS overall minimum score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component)


  • knowledge and/or experience in the subject.
