This PhD project is part of the Cotutelle arrangement between Coventry University, UK and Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia. The successful applicant will spend 1 year at Coventry University, the second year at Deakin University and the remaining 1.5 years at Coventry University.

The supervision team will be drawn from the two Universities.

Successful candidates will receive a full scholarship covering course fees and living costs. Students will study in both Universities and on successful completion will be awarded a PhD by both

Museums are great places for learning. In a museum, children and adults alike can immerse themselves in distant places or learn how scientific discoveries are made. Museums can also reveal a cultural past, present or future. Due to the ubiquity of digital technologies, museum exhibitions are becoming ever more technologically advanced. Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Realities (MR) are one of the most useful technologies in heritage interpretation as they enable serendipitous exploration. Furthermore, game-like museum experiences enable VR/AR/MR to become even more engaging and inspiring.

The project will explore how gameful/playful design, serious games, game-based learning, gamification, and game design thinking can be employed to create engaging VR/AR/MR museum experiences for interpreting engineering and design heritage. As a case study, local engineering and design heritage content in Coventry will be selected to create a gameful/playful VR/AR/MR pop-up museum experience. The experience will be presented to public within the UK Capital of Culture 2021 and tested on users. The results of user evaluations and recommendations how best to design and develop similar experiences will be useful in other VR/AR/MR within and outside the field of museums and heritage.

This project will be part of the Research Centre for Postdigital Cultures (CPDC), which is a disruptive iteration of the Centre for Disruptive Media (, brings together media theorists, practitioners, activists and artists. It draws on cross-disciplinary ideas associated with open and disruptive media, the posthuman, the posthumanities, the Anthropocene and the Capitalocene to help both 21st century society and the university respond to the challenges they face in relation to the digital at a global, national and local level. In particular, the CPC endeavours to promote the transformation to a more socially just and sustainable ‘post-capitalist’ knowledge economy.

To this end, the CPC’s research includes projects funded by Jisc, the National Lottery Fund, the EU, and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Members of the CPC are involved in editing peer-reviewed journals such as Cultural Studies and Culture Machine, and in developing innovative organisations such as Open Humanities Press and the Radical Open Access Collective.

£15,000 bursary plus tuition fees - UK/EU/International

  • The successful candidate will receive comprehensive research training including technical, personal and professional skills.
  • All researchers at Coventry University (from PhD to Professor) are part of the Doctoral College and Centre for Research Capability and Development, which provides support with high-quality training and career development activities. 

Successful applicants will have:

  • A minimum of a 2:1 first degree (second class honours upper division) in a relevant discipline/subject area with a minimum 70% mark in the project element or equivalent with a minimum 70% overall module average, and/or
  • a minimum of English language proficiency (IELTS overall minimum score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component)
    • the potential to engage in innovative research and to complete the PhD within a prescribed period of study
  • A Masters Degree in a relevant subject area will be considered as an equivalent. The Masters must have been attained with overall marks at 70%. In addition, the dissertation or equivalent element in the Masters must also have been attained with a mark at 70%.
  • Strong industrial experience is desirable.
  • The potential to engage in innovative research and to complete the PhD within a prescribed period of study
