Senior Lecturer in English Literature

My Research Vision

My research focuses on literature, but not always for its own sake. Rather, I consider the collaborative work that literature undertakes with other media: its relationships with art, with design, with music, with dance. I am interested in the processes by which, for example, a literary work becomes a dance piece or a sculpture becomes a poem. How can text become movement? How might something seen become something heard? In acknowledging these connections and taking an intermedial approach, I hope to promote a better understanding of how culture is produced and received, and encourage communication across the aesthetic disciplines. 

BIOGRAPHY

Lynsey McCulloch is an early career researcher and a Lecturer in English literature – principally the writing of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries – in the Department of English and Languages at Coventry University. She holds BA (Hons) and MA degrees in literary studies and a PhD in ‘Animated Statuary in Early Modern Drama’. Her research interests include renaissance frontispieces, ekphrasis and the interface of writing and art, the reception and adaptation of Shakespeare's plays, and the relationship between dance, music and literature. McCulloch’s first full-length book, Reinventing the Renaissance: Shakespeare and his Contemporaries in Adaptation and Performance (edited with Sarah Annes Brown and Robert I. Lublin), was published in May 2013 by Palgrave Macmillan. She is currently developing a monograph on statues that come to life within literary and dance works, an edited collection on Shakespeare and dance, and a pedagogical project on outdoor learning within higher education.

  • Dance in Literature | Literature as Dance: A Cross-Disciplinary Research Project: This project seeks to examine the relationship between literature and dance. It explores the descriptions of dance made by writers in their poems, plays and novels but also the ways in which choreographers adapt literary texts into dance works. In other words, it studies dance in literature | literature as dance.
