Dancing Bodies in Coventry (DBiC) is a Coventry University funding City of Culture 2021 seed funded project that is being led by artist-researchers Rosa Cisneros and Marie-Louise Crawley from C-DaRE. Dancing Bodies in Coventry is a multimedia project that will start to document the legacy of dance in the city of Coventry.

The project is making several films, two related podcasts, a series of visual banners, and aims to have a public sharing at a location in Coventry. Through the making of the films, DBiC will start to create an archive for the city that is focussed on dance. The project brings forward a range of dance artists, festival organisers, dance schools and local groups, and aims to enable them to share their dance stories with the wider Coventry community. The films will sit online and will be publicly available for people to view. All images and videos will be created with the intention to celebrate the dance legacy of the city.

For the ‘C-DaRE Invites’ series Rosa and Marie-Louise will introduce a screening of two of the films from the project and then sit down in conversation with featured artists Adrian Dowling and Lily Hayward-Smith, with Jenna Hubbard.

The first film features Adrian Dowling, an artist and promoter based in Coventry, UK. It looks at the Eclipse (later The Edge) that was the first legal all-night club that brought people from all walks of life together.

The second film featuring dance artists Lily Hayward-Smith and Jenna Hubbard offers an insight into a beautiful and special friendship and documents how the two co-created works in the city of Coventry. Both artists were integral parts of DECODA, an artist-led project based in the West Midlands with an international reach. DECODA created spaces for conversation, practice and community, offered residencies and curated workshop series, festivals and performance events. This film briefly looks back at the DECODA legacy and further stories about making dance in Coventry.
