Three Indian women who have won scholarships to study science and engineering in the UK hope to inspire other female students to follow in their footsteps.

The students will begin master’s degrees at Coventry University in September after being awarded British Council 70th Anniversary Scholarships.

They are among 100 women from India to receive the financial awards to mark the organisation’s 70th year in the country.

It’s the first British Council scholarship programme solely for women and covers tuition fees for a one-year Master’s course in science, technology, engineering and maths.

The programme supports Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promotion of development and opportunities for women in these fields.

Scholarship recipient Madhurya Manjunath Mamulpet, 21, from Bangalore, will study an MSc in Network Computing at Coventry University. She said:

I’m very proud and happy to receive this scholarship. My long-term goal is to work in the field of networking and this course will allow me to explore this subject with more depth and knowledge of trending technologies.

Scholarships like these are vital for Indian women and I hope they continue as many women in India can’t afford to follow their dreams. These scholarships help them achieve their dreams and will help develop better scientists and analysts and better relationships among organisations in UK.

I hope this will educate more women about pursuing a career in STEM subjects, especially networking.

Sugandha Singh, 24, from New Delhi, will study an MSc in Engineering Business Management, thanks to the scholarship. She said:

The companies that I dream of working with look for people who are skilled in both technical as well as managerial aspects. The master’s course that I chose has a lot of scope for the future as, along with technical skills, managerial skills are also important.

Receiving this scholarship has given me a lot of self-confidence which has made me strong enough to take up the challenges which previously seemed impossible to me.

I’m so pleased there are opportunities such as this scholarship to encourage women in India to study science and technology subjects. There is so much potential for women to do wonders in their lives and achieve things that at first glance might appear impossible.

Pete French, deputy head of international development at Coventry University, said:

We’re very proud that three of the students to receive this British Council scholarship will be attending Coventry University from September.

We’re always pleased to open our doors to inspiring students and help them to make a difference in the world. All three of these women have a great future ahead of them in science, engineering and computing, and we’re looking forward to helping them achieve their goals – as well encouraging other women to pursue these subjects.
