Chartered Management Institute

This degree programme has been developed to allow modules to align to the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) qualification. On completion of your degree you will achieve a CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management & Leadership, this means you graduate with two qualifications instead of one, an attractive prospect to employers. Students who undertake this course are awarded membership for the duration of the programme and one year after graduating for free. This valuable membership gives students access to resources, journals and professional insights, while putting students in the same arena as practising managers.

Course information

Many areas of management and leadership, such as the development of new concepts and modern project management, require graduates to have good theoretical and practical knowledge to control, implement and evaluate new developments.

This varied degree programme supplies you with the skills and knowledge needed for successful entry into management. This is an applied course and recognises the multidisciplinary approach that is needed in business leadership. Throughout your degree, you will study the details of operating markets, information technology and leadership practice, demonstrating a capability to maintain auditable records of your work.

This Higher National Certificate (HNC) programme is year one of the Business Management & Leadership BA (Hons) Degree. It focuses on the organisational environment and decision making processes at junior management level. You’ll cover a broad range of topics, from core concepts of current management and organisational behaviour, to the fundamentals of business policy and strategy. You will also develop the necessary skills and knowledge that will prepare you for study in years two and three. Students who complete year one are awarded a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Management & Leadership

Sandwich and placement years give you the opportunity to gain further insight into the industry or career you are seeking to follow. This enables you to contextualise the theoretical models and concepts discussed in the classroom in the workplace. Furthermore, if you choose to take advantage of a placement or sandwich year, this version of the degree will help to increase your employment prospects by acquiring skills and gaining an understanding of what employers expect of graduates.

Overview

At this stage, you are dealing specifically with the challenges and opportunities faced by a strategic manager. The need to continuously assess and evaluate the business landscape is of paramount importance, along with the ability to work effectively and autonomously. This final year covers strategic leadership principles, organisational design and strategic marketing. You’ll also conduct a strategic business project on a management issue that brings together key themes from across the three years of study. Students who complete year three are awarded a BA (Hons) Degree in Business Management & Leadership.

Managing People: One of the fundamental concepts in leadership and management is the management of people. This includes getting the most from employees within the organisation in a supporting manner, leading, motivating and encouraging staff to willingly contribute to the growth and improved quality of the organisation.

Managing Operations: Responsible for establishing the how, where, when and why, you will understand the art of delivering the best outcomes and processes of operation. You will acknowledge the effectiveness of efficiency within an organisation and look at different work practices such as lean and agile operations and organisational methods required to achieve this.

Management Resources: This includes the control and operation of budgets and financial reserves and the infrastructure required to deliver necessary outputs in time and to sufficient quality. Avoiding resource waste and ensuring the maximum return on investment is paramount to successful managers.

Managing Information: Decision making is fundamental to the success of a manager. Faced with substantial amounts and a variety of information on a daily basis, it is important that managers are able to make effective decisions quickly. This can only be done if the manager has an effective way of managing and being able to assess accurately the information that they receive.

Managing Self: Personal management requires determination, effort, high quality personal organisation, skills essential for successful and competent managers to deliver results. Developing rigorous and effective self-organisation skills are qualities valued by all employers.

This course is available as a full-time three year or optional four-year sandwich course, the latter incorporating a work placement or study year in a related field. Alternatively, part-time study is also available and with our Saturday University programme, this course can be completed in as little as three years. Our teaching methods are varied, offering a number of teaching styles to suit the needs of all our students, so in addition to lectures, we also utilise a blended learning approach, including online aspects, workshops and group work.

We also operate an open-door policy, with additional availability via email and our online learning platform, Moodle.

Progression through the modules develops knowledge and skills, including communication (written and oral), study skills, research methods, project management, presentation and career development. We will also encourage you to consider your employability and/or entrepreneurial development.

Unlike traditional institutions, there are no end of year exams. Instead, learning is assessed through coursework and phase tests, which is more reflective of our learning model.

The learning outcomes of modules, assignments and projects will be clearly stated. Your work will be marked according to how well you achieve these learning outcomes and your final feedback will refer to each outcome, as well as providing an overall percentage grade.

Assessment methods vary and include, practical class and project performance, written practical reports, project thesis, oral presentations, tutorial tasks and assessments which take place at the end of each six-week block.

Course Breakdown (approximately):

  • 80% Coursework
  • 20% Interactive Assessments

On completion, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding and knowledge of the theoretical, analytical and practical aspects of management strategies and processes within a changing environment, to meet stakeholder interests.
  • Critically appraise theories related to the development of staff, including crucial factors in the development of people management, including ethics, culture and change.
  • Be proficient in developing international-level strategy, incorporating and considering currency, cultural and competitor risk.
  • Develop appropriate research and analysis techniques, alongside the ability to undertake reliable market research activities.
  • Operate, lead and collaborate in a team to solve problems of a practical (experimental) nature and to provide appropriate solutions.
  • Apply appropriate presentation and evaluation tools to establish the significance of research data produced. 

Full-time students receive 18 hours of teaching each week.
Classes are split into two categories:
Morning - 9am-1pm
Afternoon - 1:30pm-5:30pm

Part-time students receive 8 hours of teaching each week.
Classes will be one day per week, day to be confirmed.

We hold tutorials in groups no larger than 5 every week. These sessions are mandatory and ensure you receive detailed feedback about your work, go into depth on specific topics and have any of your burning questions answered.

Contact time with staff is high and group sizes are kept small. We don’t teach in huge lecture theatres filled with hundreds of students.

Full-time (UK/EU)

For the academic year 2018/19, each six-week block will comprise one 30-credit module. For student funding purposes, a full-time course is made up of 120 credits’ study in a single academic year i.e. 4 modules/blocks. This makes up one stage of the qualification (HNC/HND/Degree).

Each block will cost £1,550 making the total tuition fee for full-time study £6,200 per year. This covers some of your learning materials, access to the CU Scarborough Library and Learning Services, all your classes and online materials.

Part-time (UK/EU)                                                                  

You may also choose to study less than four blocks (120 credits) per year, making the duration of your studies longer and meaning that each stage of your course will take more than one academic year to complete. Each block will cost £1,550 so the tuition fee payable will depend on the number of blocks studied per year.

Please note that if you do study at a slower pace you will need to re-enrol to complete the stage in the next academic year.

Funding

Full-time and part-time students resident in the UK or EU can apply to the Student Loans Company for a loan to cover the cost of your tuition fees at CU Scarborough.

International

For the academic year 2018/19, each six-week block (30 credits) will cost £2,250 making each stage of the course £9,000. This covers some of your learning materials, access to the CU Scarborough Library and Learning Services, all your classes and online materials.

The tuition fees stated on the course webpage, prospectus and your offer letter will apply for the duration of your course, subject only to changes to the law or government requirement.
