Our BA (Hons) Sport & Leisure Management degree aims to create work-ready graduates with skills in developing and managing sports, sports leadership and leisure events management.

This degree programme has been developed to allow modules to align to the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) qualification. On completion of your degree you will achieve a CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management, this means you graduate with two qualifications instead of one, an attractive prospect to employers.

Year one, at Higher National Certificate (HNC) level, focuses on giving you a sound grounding in how sport and leisure activities are delivered and managed effectively by its many agencies. This would allow a typical HNC qualified student to enter the industry with a broad understanding, for example as a recreation assistant or sports leader in a public or private sector organisation.

Year two at Higher National Diploma (HND) level will continue to build industry knowledge, but delve more into what is needed to run an organisation efficiently in terms of resources applied to operations.
This would allow you to enter the industry with deeper understanding of management dimensions that for example a supervisor or duty manager of a leisure centre or retail specialist would require.

An optional placement or sandwich year gives you the chance to gain further insight into the industry or career you are seeking to follow, enabling you to apply your theoretical knowledge to the workplace. You can also choose to take an optional year abroad between years two and three. If you decide to take advantage of a placement year this version of the degree will help you acquire valuable work experience and gain an understanding of what employers seek in graduates. It is your responsibility to find a placement with an employer within your chosen sector. The careers and employability department, alongside the course team, will support you throughout your placement year*.

Degree level in your final year will prepare you for a manager’s role with a view of 'why' strategy, with problem solving and planning vital skills for success in the industry. A graduate of the BA (Hons) degree in Sport & Leisure Management might aspire to apply for roles as an assistant/deputy manager with responsibilities for marketing, project management, funding and delivery.

This course is available as a full-time three year course. Our teaching methods are varied, offering a number of teaching styles to suit the needs of all our students, so in addition to lectures, we also utilise a blended learning approach, including online aspects, workshops and group work.
We also operate an open-door policy, with additional availability via email and our online learning platform, Aula.
Progression through the modules develops knowledge and skills, including communication, study skills, research methods, self-promotion, presentation and career development. We will also encourage you to consider your employability and/or entrepreneurial development.
Unlike traditional institutions, there are no end of year exams. Instead, learning is assessed through coursework and phase tests, which is more reflective of our learning model.
Our teaching methods are varied with a number of teaching styles to suit different students, so in addition to lectures, we also teach via online mediums, workshops and group work.
The learning outcomes of modules, assignments and projects will be clearly stated. Your work will be marked according to how well you achieve these learning outcomes and your final feedback will refer to each outcome, as well as providing an overall percentage grade.
Assessment methods vary and include, practical class and project performance, tutorial tasks and assessments, which take place at the end of each six-week block.
If you choose to study full-time you can expect up to 20 hours of learning activities per week, made up of face-to-face teaching, individual and group tutorials, online classes and independent learning.
Contact time with staff is high and group sizes are kept small. We don’t teach in huge lecture theatres filled with hundreds of students.
If you haven't met the entry requirements, you may still be able to progress onto a degree by studying a foundation course.

Fees & Funding
We price our courses competitively in an attempt to make higher education accessible for a wide range of people. Your tuition fees will cover all of your classes, online tutorials, some of the learning materials and access to our Library & Learning Services.
Full-time and part-time students resident in the UK or EU can apply to the Student Loans Company for a loan to cover the cost of your tuition fees at CU London.
This course may incur additional costs associated with any field trips, placements or work experience, study abroad opportunities or any other opportunity (whether required or optional), which could include (but is not limited to) travel, accommodation, activities and visas.
A key part of the course is to prepare students for both immediate sport and leisure related work, including coaching and sports leading, alongside longer term supervisory and management skills and aspirations.
Students completing year two will have started to develop specialisms such as lifeguarding, football coaching and marketing. Students completing the degree will have developed key management skills in a field which, along with hospitality, tourism and events, is one of the fastest growing areas of the global economy. The sport and leisure management sector has seen increasing professionalism amongst those who work within it and employers may favour graduates in recruitment situations.
The tuition fee for the course that is stated on the course webpage and in the prospectus for the first year of study will apply. We will review tuition fees each year. For UK and EU students, if Parliament permit an increase in tuition fees, we may increase fees for each subsequent year of study in line with any such changes. Note that any increase is expected to be in line with inflation. Following the UK’s planned exit from the European Union, EU students should be aware that there may be a change to UK laws following the UK’s exit, this may change their student status, their eligibility to study part time, and/or their eligibility for student finance. We will act in accordance with the UK’s laws in force in relation to student tuition fees and finance at that time.
