Writing Your CV

Compiling or updating a CV is a worthwhile first step in your journey to employment. A CV is usually the first point of contact between applicant and employer. It is a marketing tool that provides a summary of employment history, qualifications and skills, and it also demonstrates your future potential. It's designed to highlight your best qualities and persuade an employer to invite you for an interview.

The golden rule is to tailor your CV to the position you are applying for, this shows respect to the employer in question; one size, doesn’t fit all! Our team can help with all the other tips and guidance you need to create a compelling CV.

Interviews & Assessment Centres

If you've been invited to an interview or assessment centre, well done! You have already impressed the employer. They consider you to be a credible candidate and on paper you have the skills required to succeed in the role. It is essential for an employer to meet you so they can determine how suitable you are for the role and it gives you a chance to prove it.

If you would like support building your confidence and responding to common questions, schedule an appointment with a member of the Careers Zone team.

Covering Letters

A covering letter is an essential part of your application and CV. This is an opportunity for you to formally respond to a job advert, introduce yourself as a suitable candidate and outline how you meet the requirements set out in the job advert and description.

The cover letter has a single purpose, which is to secure an interview. Applicants who include a covering letter with their CV are 10% more likely to get a reply.

Book an appointment with a member of the Careers Zone team and they will be able to guide you through the process of writing an effective covering letter.

Work Experience & Placements

A work placement gives you the chance to gain hands on experience of the working world and develop employability skills which are invaluable in helping you to build your career. Placements help you to gain some real world industry experience of how the theory on your course applies in a practical business environment.

Book an appointment with a member of the Careers Zone team to discuss what work placements would be suitable for you.

Mentoring

We offer a mentoring scheme that links students with people that can share their knowledge, skills and experience to help you progress in your career. Mentoring is more than just giving advice, it’s about motivating, empowering and helping individuals to understand their true potential, to help them achieve their goals within a confidential and supportive environment.

Fill out our online form to take part in our mentoring scheme.

I loved to listen to the practical examples of career situations provided by my mentor, that will help me in my future career.

It helped me clarify some things in my life, make the decision to undertake a master's degree and understand how job interviews work. It has given me good memories and valuable notes for the rest of my working life. I highly recommend any student be part of the mentoring scheme and get some help deciding on a future career.
