Digital Design Consultancy (DDC) is a creative industry-focused course that uses a multi-disciplinary approach, inspiring students to gain practical media, business, IT and marketing skills; enabling them to respond innovatively to client needs.

DDCs use their expertise of social media, marketing, advertising and business to advise clients about how to generate engaging material, such as animation, digital and printed promotional branding, video and websites that will grow their client’s business. 

The independent learning focus of the course will give future digital consultants the confidence to take those recommendations and create them using the latest industry technology.

This course has been designed, in conjunction with employers, to respond to the increasing demands of the digital design industry and the need for DDCs to be agile creators and thinkers, ready to innovatively support the needs of a client.

Course information

Digital Design Consultancy is a practical multimedia course that spans several design, video, web marketing and animation disciplines.

Digital Design Consultants work with individual clients and businesses to determine what will boost their engagement and revenue. The multi-skilled digital design consultant will then craft those digital products, creating dynamic campaigns for their clients. 



Students will learn the fundamental production skills in a range of multimedia disciplines including digital moving image production, 2D and interactive design, web design and professional consultancy skills. The creation, communication and management of digital products and projects will enable students to develop their entrepreneurial thinking and apply this to create effective products that will engage their client’s customers.


  • Professional Consultancy Skills

    Essential skills for working within a business and design and production studio environment. Key skills covered include research, how to interpret and negotiate client briefs, engaging with and using business analysis techniques and professional and academic communication skills.

  • Digital Media Principles

    A focus on visual communication takes the lead in this module. Students will explore working with industry design and production software to construct creative products which engage with audiences. Students will undertake a range of informal and formally assessed projects which focus on branding, creating multimedia and viral content in addition to exploring storytelling techniques.

  • Interactive Design Principles

    Human-computer interaction, responsive design principles and visual communication are all explored across a range of platforms. Students will engage with key concepts such as user experience, visual literacy and interface types.

  • Web Development Principles

    Students will research, analyse and interact with a range of web-based materials in order to evaluate what makes a successful and effective website. They will explore how to create structure, pages, scripting and how to engage with a workflow that will enable them to design their own site.

  • Communication Design

    Effective communication with audiences, clients and stakeholders is the focus for this module. Students will explore how to engage audiences through carefully though-out and constructed advertisements, campaigns and digital communications. Students will demonstrate the key marketing principles, branding techniques and strategies through a range of industry-led projects.

  • Digital Technology Application

    Motion graphics and animation techniques can drive audience engagement on a variety of platforms. Students will explore how to create innovative and energetic products using a range of 3D, animation and post-production software.


The final year will provide students with opportunities to become digital influencers. They will take ownership, monitor and manage existing campaigns, learn how to teach others, promote their own skills and services to potential employers and clients and to become change agents within the industry.


  • Agile Product Development

    Students will learn how to negotiate the fast-paced and innovative discipline of mobile application development through agile project management techniques. Students will gain an understanding of operating systems, mobile platforms, developer tools and user experience design concepts to discover exciting new ideas for mobile applications.

  • Digital Entrepreneurship

    Understanding how businesses operate in order to trailblaze in developing new business opportunities is an invaluable skill for the Digital Design Consultant. Students will learn how to evaluate new business and start-up opportunities in order to develop new models and innovative new digital ventures for their clients.

  • Digital Influencer Skills

    The digital relationship between users and digital products is vital for any digital practitioner when considering the creation of digital material or services for their clients. This module will enable students to understand and use the tools needed to understand how social media can reach and influence their client’s users.

  • Digital Practitioner Skills

    When creating new and innovative digital products and systems, there will often be an existing workforce that will need to adapt and adopt them. The Digital Design Consultant will often be the expert in the room that clients will use to help their employees understand new technology platforms. This module will focus on enabling students to understand how they can use their creative production skills to teach others how to use the new technologies and platforms that they have created for a company or client.

  • Digital Strategy Project Management

    This module will offer students the invaluable experience of working within the budget and resources that a company already has or can afford and working creatively to create solutions in order to progress a project through to a successful conclusion. Key tools in project management, collaboration and effective communication will be utilised by students to work independently within a simulated work environment in order to achieve business targets and objectives.

  • Agile Design Solutions

    Self-promotion and energetic networking are essential for success as a Digital Design Consultant. This module will allow students to gain valuable experience in creating self-promotional materials and communicating with potential employers. They will plan, design and execute their own Networking and Expo Event. Elevator pitching, interview techniques and talent showcasing will be valuable skills gained by completing this module.

The Digital Design Consultancy role is part of a fast-paced and expanding industry. This course is taught as an accelerated two-year programme which is designed to support your development of the essential skills you need to get you employment-ready and into the industry quicker. Our teaching methods are varied, offering a number of teaching styles to suit the needs of all our students, so in addition to lectures, we also utilise a blended learning approach, including online aspects, workshops and group work.

We also operate an open-door policy, with additional availability via email and our online learning platform, Moodle.

Progression through the modules develops knowledge and skills, including communication (written and oral), study skills, research methods, project management, presentation and career development. We will also encourage you to consider your employability and/or entrepreneurial development.

Unlike traditional institutions, there are no end of year exams. Instead, learning is assessed through coursework, portfolios and group work which is more reflective of our learning model.

The learning outcomes of modules, assignments and projects will be clearly stated. Your work will be marked according to how well you achieve these learning outcomes and your final feedback will refer to each outcome, as well as providing an overall percentage grade.

Assessment methods vary and include, practical class and project performance, written practical reports, project thesis, laboratory experiments, tutorial tasks and assessments, which take place at the end of each six-week block.

Full-time students are expected to study a minimum of 21 hours each week.
The majority of this will be face to face teaching, with the addition of tutorials and independent/online learning.
Classes are split into two categories:
Morning - 9am-1pm
Afternoon - 2pm-6pm

Groups are kept at an average of 25-50 students per class. This way, students can take advantage of small numbers to increase contact time with lecturers.

This course is offered as an accelerated degree programme, where you are able to study six blocks each year and finish in two academic years. The fees for this option start at £9,250 per year, a total of £18,500 across the full degree. You would still be eligible for both tuition fee loans and maintenance payments, which would be split across the six blocks evenly to ensure you are funded throughout the academic year. As a full-time student or part-time student resident in the UK or EU, you can apply for a loan to cover the cost of your tuition fees at CU Coventry from Student Finance England.

Career prospects

Graduates from BA Digital Design Consultancy can move into a variety of media-industry related jobs such as animation, moving image production and design. Graduates may also wish to explore a career in marketing and media management, in addition to exploring work as a freelancer.


The University will charge the tuition fees that are stated on the course webpage and in the prospectus for the first year of study. The University will review tuition fees each year. For UK and EU students, if Parliament permit an increase in tuition fees, the University may increase fees for each subsequent year of study in line with any such changes. Note that any increase for UK and EU Students is expected to be in line with inflation. For international students, the University may increase fees for each subsequent year of study but such increases will be no more than 5% above inflation.
