Course information

With this course, you can develop your media skills across a range of platforms, including photography, television, film and visual communications.

This final year course involves working with your peers as well as individually, to build up your portfolio, and working to produce a final project. To work towards becoming an all-round practitioner, you’ll also have the chance to learn how to manage creative projects. Once completed, you should have the skills and demonstrative ability to succeed in the job market and real world environments – which is the fundamental aim of the course.

Modules

Overview

The course runs for 2 semesters during which you will consider the process, theory and practical applications of your chosen area of media. You will work with other students to realise projects and develop your creative ideas.

In the second semester you will work on an individual or small group project that will showcase your skills and knowledge.

This course includes a field trip to Hong Kong in Semester 1 which will be subsidised.

    Every student will take a 10 credit module from a range of options offered by the university.

This is a third year top-up course so you will be developing your existing skills, knowledge, and understanding in order to produce a professional portfolio that represents who you are as a creative media practitioner.

You will produce a number of pieces of work and one final major project which brings these skills together, thus developing a portfolio of work that you can use when looking for work after graduation. 

The course is, naturally, very practical and is taught through workshops, seminars, and lectures. In addition, your Academic Personal Tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows:

  • Practical or project work: 70%
  • Coursework, tests, essays: 20%
  • Presentations, posters etc: 10%

A compulsory Add+vantage module must also be completed each year.

In a typical week you will have up to 14 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as follows:

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1 hour of tutorial each week.
  • Medium group teaching: 12 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each week.
  • Large group teaching: 2 hours of lectures each week.

Additionally, you will be expected to complete 20+ hours of studying and revising in your own time each week.

You will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of projects that will require you to undertake short visits and field trips both in the UK and abroad.

We run numerous trips each year and select the places on an annual basis. Recent field trips have included: Cyprus, Hangzhou, Kenya, Los Angeles, New York, Norway, Paris, Prague, Sierra Leone, Tenerife. On all trips, you will be engaging in production projects that will become part of your professional portfolio.

The University offers help, both practical and financial, through the Centre for Global Engagement (CGE) for all international experience.

Entry Requirements

UCAS entry profiles may be found by searching for the relevant course on the UCAS website, then clicking on ‘Entry profile’

Entry requirements – at level 5, Art and Design or Media qualification. (240 HND Credits - Merit Profile) and GCSE English (Grade A-C) or equivalent.

Students entering onto this programme should have achieved 240 credits at levels 4 and 5 (Merit profile). They should possess a Higher Diploma, Higher National Diploma or the equivalent in a relevant subject such film and television, media production, photography, graphic design, animation, web design.

Students will submit a portfolio of work and may be interviewed either face to face or virtually to determine their suitability for the course.

EU student fees

EU nationals and their family members starting in the 2019/20 academic year remain eligible for the same fees as home students and the same financial support. Financial support comes from Student Finance England, and covers undergraduate and postgraduate study for the duration of their course, providing they meet the residency requirement.

For tuition fee loans

EU nationals must have resided in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland for the three years prior to the start of their course. The purpose of that three year residency should not have been mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education.

For maintenance loans

EU nationals must have resided in the UK and Islands for the five years prior to the start of their course. The purpose of that five year residency should not have been mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education.

During the course you will learn and develop the creative, technical and transferable skills you will need to thrive as a professional when you graduate. These include creative skills and knowledge, entrepreneurial and management skills, critical skills, presentation and writing skills, as well as interpersonal and management skills.

Where our graduates work

Many of our graduates pursue careers in established roles within the media industries (camera operators, editors, etc.) or become freelance media producers. Others undertake the appropriate qualifications to become teachers in schools and colleges and others go on to work with community arts organisations or as arts administrators.
