Forensic Science BSc (Hons) with foundation year

Learn about the structures of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids, linking them to function and roles within biological systems. Examine enzymes, metabolic pathways and the energy used to drive these processes, while also considering the role of computational biology in visualising and understanding biological activities. Analysis methods, including spectrophotometry and chromatographic separation techniques, will be considered in both theory and practice.

Gain a sound appreciation of good laboratory practice, including proper record keeping, following quality standards and conducting key lab procedures and calculations. Learn to use modern digital tools to analyse and present data clearly, along with how to write standard laboratory reports.

Compulsory

Investigate the physiology of the human body, beginning with cellular organisation and signalling, all the way through to organ systems, their control and pathophysiology. Learn the process of human embryonic development to understand how distinct physiological systems develop.

Build your knowledge of how the main systems in the human body are developed, structured and organised, such as the nervous, muscular, skeletal, hormonal, heart, lung, reproductive, digestive and kidney systems. Learn how these systems work together to keep the body in balance (homeostasis). This module also covers how cells interact and communicate through cell signalling. You will be introduced to key concepts in how drugs work in the body (pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics), as well as how new medicines are developed.

Compulsory

Learn the principles of inheritance, human genetics, population genetics and evolution. You will be introduced to the discovery and structure of DNA and study how traits are passed down, including human blood groups and mitochondrial inheritance.

Discover how DNA is used to make RNA and proteins (transcription and translation) and learn how to analyse genetic sequences using bioinformatics tools and analytical software. Explore the ethical issues around access to genetic data and how historical events and research projects have shaped the field.

Compulsory

Learn how crime scenes are examined and managed, how evidence is collected and the methods used to analyse it. This module examines the roles of those attending a crime scene and how investigators recover evidence. Take part in a simulated crime scene exercise, collect evidence and learn how to photograph and map the scene. These exercises are designed to build important skills such as thinking quickly, working well with others, staying motivated and developing social responsibility.

This module introduces you to key areas of forensic science, including basic anatomy, genetics and biological evidence, such as DNA, blood and blood pattern analysis. Explore forensic pathology, autopsies and the importance of avoiding contamination during evidence recovery.

Study how to analyse physical evidence such as fingerprints, marks and drugs, supported by case studies and hands-on laboratory sessions.⁴ Understand how forensic science is used in real investigations, from crime scene to courtroom, and discuss key issues like ethics, bias and decision-making.

Compulsory

Build on your knowledge from the Foundations of Forensic Science module by focusing on more complex DNA analysis. Learn how to handle mixed samples and explore modern techniques like multiplex PCR for Short Tandem Repeats analysis, Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms analysis for predicting traits, and mitochondrial DNA testing. Explore RNA analysis to identify body fluids and estimate when they were deposited, along with other forensic identification methods such as DNA methylation.

Compulsory

Develop your understanding of the analysis and forensic opportunities afforded by a range of physical evidence types. This will include marks evidence, particulates (such as glass, paint, diatoms and gunshot residue), drugs of abuse, and other forms of physical evidence (such as fire and explosive residues). Consider aspects such as transfer and persistence and gain a practical and theoretical understanding of the collection and analysis involved with physical evidence types. With support from case studies and practical laboratory sessions, develop a real-world understanding of these evidence types, as well as skills and behaviours that foster graduate attributes such as being an agile thinker. 

Compulsory

Explore more complex crime scene scenarios and the scene management associated with them. Consider various aspects such as weather, day/night scenes and scenarios that need more complex protocol evaluations such as fire and explosives scenes. Complete both planned and dynamic risk assessments for these scenarios that require understanding elements of health and safety law, as well as specific risks such as asbestos and structural integrity.

Learn how digital investigations work within the UK legal system, focusing on how to find and recover digital evidence. Explore key areas such as different types of digital evidence, methods of forensic investigation, file systems (old and new), registry files, password recovery, data collection and how to examine computer systems using professional forensic tools.

Look at how 3D technologies are used in the criminal justice system, from investigating crime scenes to presenting evidence in court. Get hands-on experience, within the classroom, with techniques like 3D scanning, laser scanning and photogrammetry to create 3D models of evidence, crime scenes, and even bodies. Explore how virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) can be used in forensic work, including practical exercises with a ‘virtual crime scene house’ or escape room-style case study.

Gain an understanding of contemporary forensic analysis techniques and their application in complex criminal investigations. Build on prior knowledge of forensic science principles and develop critical evaluation skills. Explore cutting-edge analytical methodologies, evaluate their limitations and explore them in the context of realistic case scenarios. Develop your ability to communicate complex scientific findings effectively.

Explore the application of core forensic principles in diverse global and industrial settings. Critically evaluate forensic methodologies within environmental, food and pharmaceutical industries, gaining insight into analytical techniques beyond traditional forensic science. Delves into the complexities of international forensic collaboration, examining variations in accreditation, evidence standards and procedures.

Through case studies and discussions, develop intercultural sensitivity and understand the challenges of operating in high-pressure, international environments such as humanitarian forensic science, including disaster victim identification and conflict zone analysis. Furthermore, explore cutting-edge biological techniques, including protein analysis, biotechnology applications and personalised therapy through genomics. By integrating theoretical knowledge with practical applications, equip yourself with the skills and critical understanding necessary for careers in a globalised forensic science landscape. 

Compulsory

This module builds on your previous learning, guiding you through the journey from crime scene to courtroom. Explore more complex cases, multiple types of offences (like homicides, sex offences and drug-related crimes) and use various evidence types. Teaching focuses on applying forensic techniques to real-world scenarios.

This module ends with a mock courtroom assessment, where you will present and defend a case report in front of others, just as a forensic expert would in court. This should give you valuable insight into the professional role of a forensic scientist and showcase your technical knowledge and communication skills.

Compulsory

During this module, you will undertake an independent research project within your discipline or area of interest. Engage in all stages of the research process, from project design and ethical approval to data collection, analysis and presentation. This module aims to foster critical thinking, problem-solving and advanced scientific communication skills, culminating in a conference-style poster presentation and defence of findings.
