Cyber Security Fundamentals – 30 credits

Learn cyber security fundamentals, tools and skills you'll use throughout your degree. Explore how to protect digital assets and data while learning how cyber-attacks happen and how to defend against them.

Work with common operating systems used in security, such as Linux and Windows command line, and build an understanding of core cyber security concepts, including cyber-crimes, data breaches, threats and attacks. Learn how to identify system and network-level vulnerabilities and how they can be exploited.

Legal and Ethical Factors in Cyber Security – 30 credits

Understand the legal and ethical issues surrounding cyber security today. Through real-life case studies, debates and discussions, explore how technology impacts society and how global laws and ethics shape what’s considered right and wrong in the digital world. Examine the ethics of computer security, the growing use of artificial intelligence and the wider social context of connected systems and data collection.

Look at professional ethics and explore key legislation such as the Computer Misuse Act, Data Protection laws and privacy regulations. Discuss how security technologies are regulated and consider important issues around intellectual property and copyright in a digital age.

Gain an introduction to information security management. Explore how an organisation’s people, data, technologies and networks all play a role in keeping information secure. Next, understand processor structure and operations, memory organisation and how machine and assembly code work. Explore key investigation methods and how to apply them in real-world scenarios. Topics include collecting, processing and preserving digital evidence, using forensic toolkits, understanding UK cybercrime legislation and following the investigative process. You’ll also cover device, Windows, Linux and memory forensics, including developing skills in forensic report-writing and expert testimony.

Build hands-on ethical hacking skills, focusing on penetration testing techniques and how to exploit remote systems responsibly. Explore a range of attack vectors and the strategies used at each stage of the penetration testing process.

Learn about penetration testing methodologies such as PTES and the Cyber Kill Chain and how to identify, classify and manage vulnerabilities. Practise server and network reconnaissance, explore common web vulnerabilities including those found in the OWASP Top 10 (like SQL injection and XSS) and develop your ability to perform privilege escalation techniques in a secure, ethical environment.

Study key areas including the structure and role of a Security Operations Centre, threat modelling techniques like attack trees, STRIDE and DREAD, and intrusion detection strategies using IDS, IPS, EDR and SIEM tools.

Learn about incident response, from preparation to recovery and explores automation tools like SOAR, XDR and AI-driven approaches. Understand the legal and ethical frameworks guiding security monitoring in the UK, EU and US.

Support lectures will help you with project planning and time management, research methods and literature reviews, system design and development, data collection and analysis, and ethical considerations.

Secure Network Design and Management – 30 credits

Investigate computer networks, covering network models, architecture and the protocols that control data transmission. Explore design methodologies like three-tier architecture and DMZ, as well as management topics such as access rights and network monitoring.

Security is a key focus, with coverage of policies, authentication methods, VPNs, ACLs and firewalls. Study WAN connectivity, network scaling, relevant protocols like OSPF and BGP, media technologies and modern services including cloud computing and service level agreements.

Digital Security Audit and Risk Management – 30 credits

Learn how to manage digital security risks through effective corporate governance, risk assessment and security audits. Learn about information assurance models and how to apply security audit frameworks through real-world case studies.

Topics include different security controls at managerial, operational and technical levels and how to align these with business goals. Study ISO 27000 standards, risk assessment methods and compliance in payment ecosystems like PCI DSS. The module also covers the COBIT governance framework and its alignment with ITIL and ISO standards.

Examine data recovery principles, storage technologies, and laws, plus forensic tools like Wireshark and TCPdump for analysing network layers and malware traces. Look into emerging areas such as social media, email and cloud forensics.

Advanced Ethical Hacking and Exploit Development – 30 credits

Explore advanced hacking techniques and how to defend against them. Study network security topics like Active Directory, virtualisation and cloud security. Learn about advanced ethical hacking skills, including reverse engineering and exploit development.

Key topics include security of network protocols such as Active Directory, advanced web exploitation, reverse engineering, exploit development, kernel-level exploits, memory corruption attacks like buffer and heap overflows, and Return-Oriented Programming (ROP).

Optional

If you meet the progression requirements, you could choose to take an additional fourth year master's option³, which will deepen your knowledge and expertise.

Gain a deep understanding of cyber security theory, cryptographic methods and how to evaluate system security.

Study platform security covering operating systems, web, embedded devices, cloud, virtualisation, security as a service and trusted computing. Learn security evaluation frameworks like OWASP and the Cyber Kill Chain.

Dive into cryptography foundations including Shannon’s information theory, entropy, stream and block ciphers, cryptographic PRNGs and hashes. Explore symmetric and asymmetric key cryptography, Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and future developments in cryptography.

Study network security architecture, firewalls and access control lists (ACLs). Reliable, scalable, flexible and secure networks are at the heart of every business. The Internet has become an invaluable tool in commerce, education and entertainment.

Explore the theory behind how networks operate, how devices communicate across a range of media and how such networks should be designed. By the end of this module, you should have a greater understanding and appreciation of the complexities of one of the most ubiquitous systems in the modern, connected world.

We regularly review our course content to keep it relevant and current for our students. Consequently, we may update modules to reflect the latest industry standards.

How you'll learn

Forget stressful end-of-year exams. We focus on applied learning using a mix of lectures, tutorials and online study to get you ready for the real world. Instead of one big test, we assess your progress through coursework and phase tests. This better reflects the way you’ll likely work in your future career.

Teaching contact hours

As a full-time undergraduate student, you will study modules totalling 120 credits each academic year. A typical 30-credit module requires 300 hours of study. Study hours are made up of teaching contact hours and guided and independent study.

Teaching hours

Teaching hours may vary, depending on where you are in your studies, but on average, you will have between 10 and 12 teaching and learning hours each week. You will also have the option to attend additional sessions, including time with a progress coach or to meet with staff for advice and feedback. As you progress through your studies, teaching hours may reduce.

Guided and independent study

Throughout your studies, you will be expected to spend time in guided and independent study to make up the required study hours per module. You will be digging deeper into topics, reviewing what you’ve learnt and completing assignments. This can be completed around your personal commitments. Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars and project-based practical classes.

In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and provide advice. You will be expected to engage in both class and online activities and discussions. We believe that the best way of learning is through doing - applying the theoretical concepts to practical problems. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on the practical development of work, with a significant portion of your time being spent on assisted lab tasks, which may involve live practical hacking challenges, seminars discussing topics such as cryptography and secrecy or project-based classes, which may involve more in-depth work developing secure systems in hostile environments².

Typical entry requirements:

64 UCAS tariff points. All foundation courses require GCSE maths and English at grade 4 / C or Functional Skills Level 2, or other equivalent Level 2 awards, and at least one A2 level or a BTEC equivalent qualification. For T levels: overall grade of Pass (D or E on the Core) in the T level qualification in any subject.

If you choose to study this course with a professional placement² or study abroad year, you will need to pay a tuition fee³ to cover your academic support throughout your placement year. Students commencing their professional placement in the academic year 2028/29 will pay £1,575 if they are paying UK fees, or £1,900 if they are paying international fees.

To secure funding for a degree with a foundation year, you must complete the full four-year programme. If you do not finish the entire course, including the integrated foundation year, you may have to pay the foundation year fees yourself. *Irish student fees

We assess your fee status using the information in your application. This status determines your tuition fees and the scholarships or financial support you can get. The Department for Education sets the rules for who pays UK (home) or international (overseas) fees in England.

The regulations list which students can pay the home fee rate. Because these rules are complex, the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) provides fee status guidance to help you find the right category. If you meet all the criteria for one category, your institution must charge you the home rate.

Facilities

You’ll spend your foundation year at our CU Coventry Mile Lane building, just a short walk from Coventry city centre. You can still make the most of all the facilities at the main Coventry University campus whenever you like.

Once you successfully complete your foundation year, you’ll move over to the Coventry University campus to study your degree.

Facilities are subject to availability⁴. Access to some facilities (including some teaching and learning spaces) may vary from those advertised and/or may have reduced availability or restrictions where the university is following public authority guidance, decisions or orders.

Your studies will be centred in high-specification learning environments that benefit from extensive social learning facilities, well-appointed laboratories, lecturing facilities and classrooms, facilitating our innovative teaching methods across a diverse suite of courses.

Ethical Hacking Lab: a course-specific room with custom operating systems and software, which allows you to reconfigure the set-up in order to practice your hacking techniques.
Networking Lab: which allows you to build and test the physical network.

³Tuition fees

The University will charge the tuition fees that are stated in the above table for the first academic year of study. The University will review tuition fees each year.

For UK (home) students, if the Parliament permit an increase in tuition fees, the University may increase fees for each subsequent year of study in line with any such changes. Note that any increase is expected to be in line with inflation.

For international students, we may increase fees annually but such increases will be no more than 5% above inflation. If you defer your course start date or have to extend your studies beyond the normal duration of the course (for example to repeat a year or resit examinations) you may be charged the tuition fees in force at the time you take that additional period of study, and/or in line with any legislative changes that apply at that time.

⁴Facilities

Facilities are subject to availability. Access to some facilities (including some teaching and learning spaces) may vary from those advertised. Availability and access may be reduced or restricted when the University is following public authority guidance, decisions or orders or internal health and safety requirements.

Student Contract

By accepting your offer of a place and enrolling with us, a Student Contract will be formed between you and the University. A copy of the current 2025/26 contract is available for information purposes only. The 2027/28 contract will apply to the 2027/28 intakes and may differ from the current version. The Contract details your rights and the obligations you will be bound by during your time as a student and contains the obligations that the University will owe to you. You should read the applicable Student Contract carefully before you accept an offer of a place and before you enrol at the University.
