Both advertising and marketing continue to play a big part in everyday life, and recent advancements in digital technology and social media allow for new and exciting ways to attract and engage customers at any time and in any place.
This course, which currently benefits from EFMD programme accreditation* and is part of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Graduate Gateway** programme, is aimed at students with an interest in advertising and marketing from the creative to the analytical – whether that is advertising and branding, consumer behaviour, digital and social media marketing, or new product development and market research. It provides an opportunity to gain a solid foundation in marketing and advertising, with a specific focus on marketing communications across different media and contexts.
When studying this course, you will have the opportunity to work in our DigiComm Lab, which has been designed for marketing students, and is equipped with industry standard marketing and advertising software, to allow you to explore how to put the theories you are being taught into practice.

Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS) – Coventry Business School is currently an active member of the Chartered Association of Business Schools, which has a membership of over 120 business schools and higher education providers, and supports its members in maintaining world-class standards of teaching and research.
European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) – Coventry Business School is currently an active member of the European Foundation for Management Development, a global membership organisation dedicated to management development, covering over 900 members across 91 countries. Coventry Business School is recognised by the above memberships for the 2021/22 intake. There is currently no intention for either of these memberships to lapse however if either of these memberships were not to be renewed we would notify applicants and students as soon as possible.

Coventry Business School's Business Simulation Suite utilises the latest business simulation software to give students the opportunity to improve their business skills.
Students have opportunities to practice simulated trading and other finance-related activities using the various types of demo software available in the Trading Floor.

The course aims to develop your awareness and understanding of contemporary marketing and advertising concepts and theories. The course is designed to equip you with the analyyical tools necessary to investigate a marketing and/or advertising problem and develop appropriate solutions.
One of the major attractions of the Advertising and Marketing course is the broad range of practical and transferrable skills you will have the opportunity to develop, including creative, analytical, interpersonal and communications skills. In several modules, the assessments require the undertaking of group and individual tasks that aims to simulate the analytical, planning and creative aspects of marketing in the workplace.

Combining theory and practice, this course focuses on practical marketing skills, which should enable you to fully explore the marketing discipline across a wide range of modules. You should explore cutting-edge skills in marketing and communications research, analysis and planning, and working with others to develop advertising campaigns. You should also improve your analytical skills using simulation games, such as the marketing management simulation game designed to develop your understanding and command of the marketing planning process.
Our current staff are experienced practitioners, having spent time in industry as marketing executives, managers and directors of private and public sector organisations. They bring knowledge of the latest marketing tools and techniques, like Google Analytics, the latest online content creation tools, and the use of behavioural insights in planning campaigns. Many of our staff are recognised both nationally and internationally in their respective fields of specialism, publishing their research in the highest quality academic journals, including the Journal of Marketing Management, Journal of Business Research, Psychology and Marketing and Journal of Consumer Behaviour to name but a few. The quality of teaching on this course is recognised as excellent: we rank 15th in the UK for Business, Management and Marketing in the Guardian University Guide 2020 (please note staff are subject to change).
To monitor emerging sector trends and challenges, there is a high degree of practitioner input. Guest speakers from industry are frequently invited to give talks about their experiences (subject to availability), in previous years these have included speakers from McCann Erickson, ITV Studios, Millward Brown, Marstons and the Mixed Reality Studio.

This course is available on a three-year full-time basis or a four-year sandwich basis, where between Years Two and Three there is one year of (optional) work experience or study abroad*** at a partner institution.
The interactive nature of teaching and the commitment of staff are regularly praised by students, as demonstrated by the Gold rating we achieved in the first ever Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) report, the government’s first major assessment of teaching quality, and our award of 5 stars for our teaching excellence in the QS Stars 2019.
Theory and practice-based lectures and seminars aim to develop your knowledge of a range of marketing and advertising topics, supported by a suite of industry-based software and hardware. Learning and teaching incorporates lectures, seminars, tutorials, presentations, projects, workshops, simulation games and practical DigiComm Lab sessions, where you can use web design software and practice web platforms and blogging techniques designed to help to develop your skills in manipulating new media for marketing and advertising applications.
You will have the opportunity to regularly get involved in simulated cases which bring the subject alive, for example, you could find yourself simulating marketing planning in the international smartphone market.
We have regular guest lectures by marketing professionals from industry and academia, subject to availability. Marketing topics covered by previous guest speakers have included McCann Erickson’s PR Account Director on a day in the life of an advertising agency, and ITV Global Studios’ Marketing Director on working in TV and working towards your dream job.
There are also a range of field trips undertaken both nationally and internationally (subject to competitive application, availability, meeting applicable visa requirements and additional costs apply). In the past, we have visited China, Malaysia and Dubai, and these visits not only help you to bond with your fellow students, but also provide the chance of exposure to industry on a global scale and to develop your intercultural competencies.
The Faculty’s employability support team will also assist you in finding a suitable placement***, which should enable you to put your studies into practice, giving you the opportunity to gain valuable experience of the world of work on a more significant scale than part‐time work. Past students have worked for the likes of IBM, L’Oreal, Rolls Royce and Warner Brothers. In addition, there are course modules and extra support sessions in marketing and potential future career options to help advance students’ preparations and prospects for potential future employment.

This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will could vary depending upon the module. Assessment methods include written reports, formal examinations, presentations, pitches, workplace simulations and portfolios.

Teaching contact hours will vary in different semesters and years of study and may vary due to module selection. In addition to the contact hours below, we offer the opportunity to attend additional optional sessions, including sessions with the Faculty’s progress coaches, or to meet with staff during their advice and feedback hours.

In your final year, if you are undertaking a project/dissertation, there is a greater emphasis placed on independent study and therefore total contact hours may be reduced.
In addition, you will be expected to undertake a significant amount of self-directed studying and revising in your own time each week, which may include, for example, guided study using hand-outs, online activities or independent work.
You will have the opportunity to gain an international experience in many ways. Coventry is a multicultural university, so our typically diverse student and staff body helps to facilitate a multicultural learning environment. However, the fundamental nature of this course is also international in its outlook, drawing on marketing and business best practice from around the world.
We currently have long-running partnerships with KH Leuven in Belgium, School for Higher and Professional Education (SHAPE) in Hong Kong and the PSB Academy in Singapore. We run a number of Collaborative Online International Learning projects on the course, which are designed to enable you to work with students across the world on a live project tackling a specific marketing challenge in global virtual and multicultural teams. In the past, previous students have worked with peers in the USA, South America, India and many European countries, undertaking business challenges as part of the international X-Culture competition.
Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to visit relevant companies providing the chance to gain a real life experience of marketing, both at home and abroad***. Previous cohorts of students have visited Leuven in Belgium, Dubai and Malaysia to experience other cultures and take part in marketing activities in international teams.

EU nationals starting in the 2020/21 academic year remain eligible for the same fees as home students and the same financial support. Financial support comes from Student Finance England, and covers undergraduate and postgraduate study for the duration of their course, providing they meet the residency requirement.
For tuition fee loans
EU nationals starting in the 2020/21 academic year must have resided in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland for the three years prior to the start of their course. The purpose of that three year residency should not have been mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education.
For maintenance loans
EU nationals starting in the 2020/21 academic year must have resided in the UK and Islands for the five years prior to the start of their course. The purpose of that five year residency should not have been mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education.

Designed to prepare you for potential future career options, this course offers lots of opportunities to participate in live cases with clients and work experience*** (short and long-term as part of a placement year). We currently have strong partnerships with a number of employers, including Coventry Council, Jaguar Land Rover, Millward Brown and the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
Field trips are embedded into each year of study, some industry-focused to provide first-hand experiences of marketing in action, others designed to help to build your professional or interpersonal skills, for example, to encourage team bonding initially and then develop team working skills (subject to availability).
In addition, careers-based modules in digital marketing, brand communications, services marketing and creative advertising and a range of other areas are embedded into the course to help build transferrable skills which aim to enhance your potential future employability.
You will have the support of the Faculty’s dedicated employment support unit (subject to availability) which has an extensive network of employers with a wide range of internship possibilities. Our employment support team will also support you (subject to availability) with workshops and guidance on the various aspects of the employment process such as preparing your CV, interview practice and mock assessment centres, as well as putting on frequent employer events, which should allow you to network with potential future employers offering graduate roles, internships and placements in the advertising and marketing sectors.

By accepting your offer of a place and enrolling with us, a Student Contract will be formed between you and the university. A copy of the 2020/21 Contract can be found here.
