This course was accredited by the Chartered Institute for IT (BCS) for the 2019/20 intake. Following changes which have been made to improve the course, we are applying for re-accreditation for entrants of 2020/21 onwards. We anticipate that our application for re-accreditation will be successful. If any changes occur with respect to our accreditation related to this course, we will seek to notify applicants and students as soon as possible.

Mac Laboratory
Our Mac laboratory is complete with Apple Mac desktops and a recording studio with green screen. There is also an equipment booking system allowing you to borrow a range of cameras and multimedia production equipment.

Informal Study Areas
Informal computer access to all the specialist software required for their students during their. There are bookable spaces where students can meet with academics or work in small groups.

Sigma Centre
An award-winning Mathematics Support Centre which provides a wide range of learning resources in mathematics and statistics. Students can make use of drop-in sessions or one-to-one appointments.

Course content has been designed to reflect changes occurring in national and international contexts, including the emergence of new technologies, policy design processes and the impact of ethical debate.

This course aims to prepare you to meet the challenges of working in a global marketplace and adapting to technological change. You will explore fundamental elements of business and IT, and should be able to deliver effective and competitive business solutions within diverse organisational global contexts.
We passionately believe that learning is much more than studying theory. The course is underpinned by practical work and industry engagement – through professional training opportunities*, expert lectures (subject to availability) and industry visits*.
Course content is adaptive and responds to the demands of business, exploring topical areas such as modern web development, business intelligence, programming, big data, cloud computing.
Our aim is to provide you with the practical knowledge and experience necessary for a career in industry or commerce in roles as software developers, enterprise architects, IT managers, consultants or business analysts.
We focus on developing your technical skills, with the aim to help you to practise and experience programming, virtualisation and cloud technologies within our specialist and general labs. You should also develop key competencies in critical analysis, application of software development, communication with technical and non-technical audiences, intercultural competences and digital literacy.
The current teaching team within the School of Computing, Electronics and Mathematics have substantial academic and industrial experience. For example, the former Country Project Director for IT for Shell international and ITV, former heads of IT, managing directors of software development houses and database specialists.

Our main study themes are:
- Programming: Our aim is to help you develop core skills in programming by exploring and applying syntax, problem-solving strategies and theory common to most programming languages. You should make use of core algorithms, libraries of code and interface with databases and graphical user interfaces (GUIs). We simultaneously cover professional practices associated with the industry, including key software development concepts, such as testing code, version control, functional decomposition; and interacting with non-technical colleagues and clients.
- Business and Business systems: We cover what business is and how it relates to Information Technology. We look at the supply chain, internal and external factors that influence the nature of business. We look at information systems, people, software, hardware, data and communication technologies and how these components can be integrated and managed to create a competitive advantage for business. You will be introduced to the methodology and techniques of IS/IT strategy, together with modelling tools and techniques used in the information systems development process. We also consider the nature of a service in the service economy and the role of IT service provision in terms of strategy, design, transition, operation and improvement.
- Web Technologies, Networks and Cyber Security: We cover a range of current web technologies. We look at modern operating systems, computer networks and cyber security.
- Technology and its social, legal and ethical context: We will explore the social, legal and ethical contexts surrounding contemporary digital technology. We examine the laws governing use of computers from many perspectives including: crime; contracts; data protection; freedom of information; copyright; and audit.
The course normally lasts three years when studied full-time and up to six years if studied part-time, though you can choose to extend the period of study if you opt for a sandwich year studying abroad or on professional placement*.
Emphasis is placed on an Activity-Led Learning (ALL) approach with group work introduced to help you develop transferrable professional skills, with the aim to prepare you for industry. Projects are used with the aim to help develop your ability to discover, evaluate and generate solutions to information systems problems.
Industry engagement is central to the course to enable you the opportunity to stay abreast of the latest advancements and issues, as well as considering your learning in a contemporary and relevant context. You could work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you could develop professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree. We also organise an inspiring programme of guest speakers from industry (subject to availability).

Read full profileThis course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will could vary depending upon the module. Assessment methods include coursework, essays, projects and group work, presentations and practical tests, formal examinations.

Actual teaching contact hours will vary depending on the level of study and the requirements of a particular semester. In a typical week your class time will be divided amongst personal tutorials and small group teaching; medium group teaching (e.g. seminars, tutorial sessions, lab sessions and workshops); and large group teaching (lectures). In addition, you will be expected to undertake significant self-directed study each week, depending on the demands of individual modules.
The number of contact hours may vary from semester to semester, however, on average, it is likely to be around 15 contact hours per week in the first and second years, dropping to around 12 contact hours per week in the final year as you become a more independent learner.
We encourage all of our students to take advantage of the opportunity to widen their international experience. If you wish to study abroad or spend a year on professional placement as a part of your degree*, we will provide support in finding a suitable placement*. One year study abroad placements are currently available in Europe or Asia*.
We also provide opportunities to attend international field trips*, which have previously focused on mobile app development in Finland and an HSBC collaborative project in China. Please note that studying abroad, professional placement and international field trip opportunities may be subject to additional costs, competitive application, availability and meeting appropriate visa requirements.

Course essentials – additional costs
This course may incur additional costs associated with any field trips, placements or work experience, study abroad opportunities or any other opportunity (whether required or optional), which could include (but is not limited to) travel, accommodation, activities and visas.
This course may incur additional costs associated with any equipment, materials, bench fees, studio or facilities hire.
EU student fees
EU nationals starting in the 2020/21 academic year remain eligible for the same fees as home students and the same financial support. Financial support comes from Student Finance England, and covers undergraduate and postgraduate study for the duration of their course, providing they meet the residency requirement.
For tuition fee loans
EU nationals starting in the 2020/21 academic year must have resided in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland for the three years prior to the start of their course. The purpose of that three year residency should not have been mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education.
For maintenance loans
EU nationals starting in the 2020/21 academic year must have resided in the UK and Islands for the five years prior to the start of their course. The purpose of that five year residency should not have been mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education.

Career prospects
Graduate Immigration Route visa
Based on current information from the UK Government, international students whose study extends beyond summer 2021 may be eligible for a visa under the UK Government’s Graduate Immigration Route, which will enable students to stay and work, or look for work, in the UK at any skill level for up to two (2) years. Check the most up to date guidance available to check your eligibility and any updates from the UK Government before making an application or enrolment decision.
The effective use of information technology is crucial to every modern business. On this course, you should not only develop the technical skills and knowledge required to create IT applications, but you should also gain a solid understanding of the business environment in which they operate.
Successful completion of this course is designed to help prepare you for careers in the design, delivery and management of IT systems within a business, although the skills learnt could be applicable in careers such as web development, data analysis, content management, business analysis and project management.
