Overview

The new BA Theatre-Making and Young People is a unique course that has been designed in association with four key industry partners who are world leaders in making theatre with, by, and for young people.

This innovative practice-based course includes modules delivered by professional artists and offers students an exceptional and focused learning journey.This course aims to engage students in real-world cultural projects, giving them opportunities to apply for vital work experience in placements across a range of arts and educational organisations. This course aims to attract students who wish to pursue a career in participatory theatre-making in both formal and informal education, and in wider community contexts.

Course information

The new BA Theatre-Making and Young People is a unique course that has been designed in association with industry partners with, by, and for young people. It will be structured around four key modules that have been designed in association with our industry partners and professional artists from these companies will co-deliver on the following modules: Youth Theatre and Social Justice; Shakespeare and Classical Theatre-Making with Young People; Theatre in Education (TIE); and Producing and Making Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA). These projects provide rich opportunities for students to work on real world performance projects with, by and for young people.

Students will have the opportunity to learn core theatre skills in directing, devising, writing, and facilitation. They will study modules in which they examine the historical, political and social contexts in which young people’s theatre work is made, the formal and informal educational contexts for this work and the pedagogy that underpins it. They will be introduced to the work of key practitioners and theoreticians, alongside the work of contemporary artists who are developing theatre making with, by, and for young people today.

The course aims to develop the students' knowledge and understanding of the rich ecology of the British theatre industry and students will have the opportunity to apply for work experience on a range of placements. In line with other creative arts courses at Coventry, this degree will encourage students to develop as reflective practitioners. It will offer students a pathway that aims to equip them with the specialist skills, knowledge, and experience to enhance their employability and help them to pursue a career in participatory theatre-making with a distinct focus on Theatre in Education, Drama in Education, Theatre for Young Audiences, and Youth Theatre.

The course is conceived in three broad layers: 1. Practice-based modules in which performance, skills are developed in workshop settings and in real world projects with professional companies; 2. Academic research and investigation, where students are required to explore the contexts and pedagogy that underpins theatre work with young people; 3. Industry-focussed, career research and employability where students will have the opportunity to work with professional artists and gain work experience on a range of placements.

Overview

In the first year students will have the opportunity to develop core foundation skills to ensure a clear pathway of development across the degree programme; they will be introduced to core theatre skills and the work and influences of key practitioners; in the second semester they will work with one of our associated Theatre Companies to explore methods used to dramatize real-life issues and stories and work as an acting company on a scripted piece that will introduce them to skills and techniques used in storytelling for an international audiences of young people. Students may also have the opportunity to attend 'Crearc: Rencontres du Jeunes Theatre Europeen' a Festival of Young People’s theatre in Grenoble France where students may attend workshops with international theatre directors, participate in an outdoor theatre event and work with youth theatre groups from across Europe.

Add+vantage

The focus on preparing students for successful futures sets Coventry apart as a university.

The Add+vantage modules teach a range of work experience and extra-curricular activities that are taken each year, and broaden students knowledge and skills within a work focused environment. There is a very wide range of Add+vantage free-choice subject areas, and they are arranged in themes.

Overview

In the second year students will work with two of our associated companies: in semester one they will co-create a TIE show that will tour to local schools, and in semester two, they will undertake a professional live brief in the Shakespeare and Classical Theatre – Making module when they will work with an artists to devise a pre-show performance that will be performed by professional actors before every show on a national theatre tour - students will have the opportunity to learn skills in creating a theatre that engages key target audiences in a classical text and is of a professional quality.

In the Writing for Performance module, students will have the opportunity to try out a variety of methods for developing scripts with, by, and for young people; in the Community placement module students will be able to gain work experience in a variety of professional contexts.

In addition to this, students will have the option of studying on international field trips alongside students on the Theatre and Professional Practice degree course who have recently travelled to Basel, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris and Tallinn.

Overview

In their final year students will work with our fourth associated company to create a TYA performance and produce a Theatre for Young Audiences mini-festival that will tour to a venue in Coventry. Alongside this the students will create a research portfolio and will have the opportunity to develop skills in assessing arts projects. In their Final Major Project they will work in small companies to create and perform and tour an original piece of work with, by or for young people.

The course normally lasts three years when studied full-time and four to six years part-time. Students successfully completing the first two years of the course can apply to take a Professional or International Enhancement module, spending a year out between the second and third years on placement or study abroad. Past students have spent a year studying at Valencia in Spain, Berlin, Nicosia in Cyprus, and Long Beach, California.

Your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

As well as having the option of a year-long work placement following second year, in your final year, you will have the chance to form a company and create an applied theatre project as part of the performing arts degree show festival.

Teaching methods include: practical classes and workshops with associated lectures and seminars.

This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will could vary depending upon the module. Assessment methods include practical or project work, coursework and essays.

The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes. Assessments may include exams, individual assignments or group work elements.

Our aim on successful completion is that you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of: histories, forms and traditions of performance within a global context, and theoretical explanations of those histories and traditions; and the processes by which performance is created, realised and managed, such as the processes of rehearsal, writing, scoring, devising, scenography, improvisation, choreography, performer training techniques and production arts.
  • Demonstrate awareness of key practitioners and practices; theorists, which may include writers, actors, composers, critics, dancers, performance artists, directors, choreographers, designers and producers; and applied and community theatre practice.
  • Analyse and critically examine diverse forms of cultural and artistic discourses and their effects on representation in the arts in an international context.
  • Critically analyse your own performance, and that of others, in a range of creative contexts.
  • Demonstrate a keen critical awareness of the main research methods used to collect and analyse data.
  • Apply a range of key components of performance within the disciplines: text, movement, aural and visual environment, and the performer as resource.
  • Engage creatively and critically with the creation and/or production of performance through a developed and sensitive understanding of appropriate performance vocabularies, techniques, crafts, new technologies, structures and working methods.
  • Engage creatively and critically with the skills and processes of production, design and rehearsal by which performance is created, and have an ability to select, refine and present these in performance.
  • Engage creatively and critically with the possibilities for performance implied by a text, movement, notation or score and, as appropriate, to realise these sources sensitively through design and performance.

DLHE 2014/15

In a typical teaching week, you will have up to 18 ‘contact’ hours of teaching.

This generally breaks down as:

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: a 1-hour smaller tutorial each week
  • Medium group teaching: 12 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each week
  • Large group teaching: 5 hours of lectures each week.

In addition, you will be expected to undertake a further 17 hours per week of self-directed studying, coursework and revising in your own time.

In their first year students may have the opportunity to attend 'Crearc: Rencontres du Jeunes Theatre Europeen' a Festival of Young People’s theatre in Grenoble France. In their second year students will have the option of international field trips alongside students on the Theatre and Professional Practice degree course who have recently travelled to Basel, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris and Tallinn. Students also have the opportunity of studying for a BA Theatre Making and Young people with International Enhancement whereby they spend the third year abroad and return for a fourth year in the UK.

Entry Requirements

BBC to include one from Drama, Theatre or Performing Arts DMM in Theatre or Performing Arts 29 points to include Theatre Arts at Higher level Minimum 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English Language, or specified equivalents

Portfolio

You may be required to submit a portfolio/show reel/written work (as appropriate for the particular course) and you may be asked to attend an interview if it is practical to arrange.

A-Levels

A-Level applicants are required to have three
 A2 Levels. Coventry University may include AS grades within an offer for certain courses, but we are not able to accept two AS Levels in place of one A2 Level. In some courses it may be necessary for entrants to have passed specific A2 Levels in nominated subjects. Please see the course pages for more information.

Access Diplomas

A pass in the Access Diploma, plus GCSE English Language at grade A*-C, or a specified equivalent.

Coventry University welcomes applicants who have completed, or who are studying, the Access to HE Diploma developed by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). Successful completion of the course will require you to gain 60 credits with at least 45 to be achieved at Level 3 (with the remainder at Level 2). In some cases we will require you to have gained Merit or Distinction grades in a number of units or in nominated subjects. BTEC Level 3 Diplomas

The University will accept the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma for entry to most courses. In some cases we will require applicants to have studied either certain named modules or a specific named Diploma. The appropriate course page will have full information on the entry requirements. The University also accepts the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma and BTEC Level 3 Diploma for entry to degree programmes, provided that they are studied in combination with other qualifications that provide a total volume of study that is equivalent to three A2 Levels. For example, you could be studying a BTEC Level 3 Diploma plus an A2 Level, or a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma plus two A2 Levels. Where a specific A2 or BTEC subject is required for entry then you must be offering this as part of your combination of qualifications.

EU student fees

EU nationals and their family members starting in the 2019/20 academic year remain eligible for the same fees as home students and the same financial support. Financial support comes from Student Finance England, and covers undergraduate and postgraduate study for the duration of their course, providing they meet the residency requirement.

For tuition fee loans

EU nationals must have resided in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland for the three years prior to the start of their course. The purpose of that three year residency should not have been mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education.

Career prospects

Students may go on to pursue careers in participatory theatre-making such as Theatre in Education, Theatre for Young Audiences, Youth Theatre or Drama in Education. The course also offers a theoretical and practical introduction to creative pedagogies that make it a potential route into Drama teaching in the formal education sector.

Where our graduates work

Recent graduates have gone on to work in the education departments of theatres including The Belgrade Theatre, The Birmingham Rep, Old Vic Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent, The Roundhouse in London. Others have found roles with a range of organisations, such as supporting national community cohesion at The Challenge, managing TEFL (Teaching of English as a Foreign Language) programmes with Dramatic English in Hong Kong, working alongside schools at specialist SEN agencies or with Live and Local promoting arts in rural Warwickshire.
