Course information

"People do not buy goods and services. They buy relations, stories and magic" – Seth Godin, author and former dot com business executive.

Marketing is at the heart of all business. In essence it should be about designing products and services which meet needs and wants, based on good quality research and market testing.

How these goods and services are transferred to the market is becoming more complex, where pricing, advertising and the development of an attractive brand is ever more challenging in a global world shaped by rapid change. To do these things efficiently and effectively, leadership and a capacity to act and think strategically is required.

Our MBA with Marketing specialism course is designed to develop these skills and prepare you to meet these challenges.

MBA with Marketing specialism will help to develop your pre-existing skills, experience or interest in marketing and management, covering topics such as ethical practice and cultural sensitivity. On your journey to become effective managers and organisational leaders, you will have the opportunity gain an in-depth understanding of, not only how a modern enterprise creates value, but how value can be sustained.

The master’s stage of the course requires participants to take these principles into specific practice contexts in order to initiate change. The emphasis throughout the course is on the application of knowledge and your development as a reflective practitioner.

The aim of the course is to enhance your global perspective and emphasise the importance to managerial practice of intercultural awareness.

We regularly review our course content, to make it relevant and current for the benefit of our students. For these reasons, course modules may be updated.

In more detail...

During this course, you’ll have the opportunity to develop a broad and holistic view of how businesses operate, including the impact of the external environment. You will look at an organisation from a different perspective: the organisation as a learning entity made up of individuals, as a combination of inter-related processes focused on adding value, and as a financial entity focused on creating monetary returns.

You will focus on exploring the role of a manager as a strategic leader and the role managers play in organisations to develop and adapt to environment changes. As part of this course you will be required to develop approaches and solutions to work-based problems which are innovative and creative, developing the ability to be entrepreneurial in your professional practice.

MBA with Marketing specialism aims to develop your pre-existing skills, experience or interest in marketing and management, covering topics such as ethical practice and cultural sensitivity. The MBA seeks to develop participants to become managers and organisational leaders who have an in-depth understanding of, not only how a modern enterprise creates value, but how value can be sustained. The master’s stage of the course requires participants to take these principles into specific practice contexts to initiate change.

The course is designed to be studied full-time or by part-time students currently in employment.

During your study, we’ll provide a mix of engaging videos, live seminars and a variety of interactive content and activities. The online contact between associate lecturers, progression coaches and fellow learners, aims to help you stay motivated and committed to your learning.

Each module runs with 10 or 20 credits across an academic semester of 13 weeks, requiring an estimated 10 to 20 hours of study time per week, made up of directed and self-directed learning. Students have the flexibility tostudy one to two modules per academic semester.

The underlying focus is on developing your ability to think critically and strategically and to enable you to develop solutions to complex problems within an ever-changing and ambiguous business environment.

You can benefit from the innovative and interactive content and activities provided on our online platform, FutureLearn. This opens up opportunities to participate in projects with students from around the world.

One of the key aims of the course is to provide you with experiences of real-life organisations. As such, you’ll be exposed to real-life case studies, simulations and expert insight to help bring contemporary and theoretical concepts to life and further your knowledge of developing strategies, handling change and managing growth.

There are three main ways that you may be assessed during your modules:

  1. Formative assessment: This is NOT credit-bearing, however we strongly recommend completing formative tasks, to ensure you receive accurate and useful formative feedback to practice skills needed for credit-bearing assessments. Formative assessment can include activities such as: peer reviews, quizzes, self-assessment.

  2. CORE assessment: This CAN be credit-bearing (though it is not always, please check your module guide carefully). CORE assessments are pass / fail only. They can include activities such as: short tests, exams, reports. You are usually given four attempts at any CORE assessment - please check your module guide carefully.

  3. Applied CORE assessment: This will ALWAYS be credit-bearing and therefore essential to passing your module. Applied CORE assessments are scored out of 100. They may include tasks such as: essays, reports, video presentations, group work, reflective pieces, exams, scientific posters.

On successful completion of the course, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an appreciation of the social, political, economic and environmental impact of an enterprise
and the need to develop ethical and responsible management practices
  • Act in a culturally sensitive manner towards an enterprise and stakeholders through having anunderstanding of the interconnected global nature of business
  • Demonstrate reflective practice for the development and achievement of personal career goals.
  • Throughout the program, participants will be encouraged and, in some cases, required to develop approaches and solutions to work-based problems which are innovative and creative. A characteristic required of aspiring leaders is the ability to be entrepreneurial and intrepreneurial in their professional practice, which is also reflected in module content and assessment.
  • See the wider external consequences of actions and decisions taken within their organisation, which is the basis of developing responsible management practice.
  • The learning environment will make use of digital technology either through a fully online delivery or via ‘flipped’ approaches to learning

Each 15-credit module will consist of 150 hours of activities. This activity time will comprise a mixture of guided and self-guided study. Students will have access to an experienced team of tutors and lecturers who will support their studies and each module will provide dedicated online tutorials to support learning.

Each 15-credit module will consist of 150 hours of activities.
