Overview

Emergencies and disasters throughout the world – acts of terrorism, violence, public disorder, natural disasters and industrial accidents – are on the rise. So too is the demand for the professionals who can best manage or mitigate their impact, reflected by our 100% graduate employability.

Time matters in a crisis. Thorough planning, multi-agency coordination and clear communication can save lives, limit disruption and reduce the long-term economic effects of disasters. This course blends academic study with experiential learning – best practice, real-life case studies, fieldtrips and crises simulations – to equip you with the skills and knowledge to effectively manage disaster relief and response, as well as advance prevention and preparedness.

Disaster management has been taught at Coventry for over 20 years. Our curriculum is systematically mapped against the current National Occupational Standards for Civil Contingencies, developed by UK Skills for Justice in association with largest professional society, The Emergency Planning Society. Our courses also benefit from a longstanding partnership with the Outreach Organisation, whose specialist training and facilities focus on rope and water rescue technical skills, Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), Casualty Management and Search Management for the emergency services.

Overview

During a common first year, you will start by developing an understanding of the causes of disasters, their impacts on people and critical infrastructure through the analysis of real case studies and the role of emergency management. As part of these studies you will be introduced to environmental systems, humanitarian operations and organisational management.

Study of disaster is the study of real world phenomena and, as such, is complemented with contemporary case studies, for example, the recent Hurricane Matthew in the Caribbean and the Amatrice earthquakes in Italy.

In your second year, you will form a deeper understanding of emergency response and crises management in the UK.

We will examine the various methods and tools for managing risk and study emergency plan development and response strategy, business continuity and crisis management in public and private sectors organisation. We explore a range of crises, such as the 2008 ‘Credit Crunch’ and the Johnson and Johnson Tylenol scandal. You will develop practical skills in Geographical Information Systems (GIS), best practice in crisis communications and methods to assess disaster interventions.

In the final year, you will learn how to design and implement training exercises as a key part of a disaster mitigation strategy. You will have the opportunity to develop a comprehensive understanding of contemporary issues in disaster management and emergency planning in the UK and internationally, such as complex emergencies and dynamic training methods.

You will also have the opportunity to carry out an independent piece of research of your choosing. For example, past students have looked at the use of social media in disaster, old and new terrorism, and evaluated crisis management frameworks used in industry.

Your main study themes are:

  • Introduction to disasters: Provides an overview of the nature of disasters and an understanding of natural and human-made phenomena that may pose a threat to people, as well as to the natural and built environments. We will study the distinct approaches to disaster and emergency intervention in developed and less developed countries. We will also look at how emergencies are managed in the UK, focusing on the statutory duties, statutory and non-statutory guidance arising from the UK and European legislative framework for emergencies, in particular, The Civil Contingencies Act. You will become familiar with the processes necessary for integrated emergency management, with an opportunity to practise implementing these processes, in particular, the preparation of emergency plans, exercises and training programmes.

  • Risk assessment and warning: Mankind no longer faces only natural disasters and war, but a whole range of manmade industrial, economic and environmental threats. Within this context, you will be introduced to the theoretical principles, tools and techniques which underpin risk management, how to use quantitative and empirical analysis to predict and assess risk, along with wider discussions of governance and ethical practice.

  • Humanitarian relief and interventions: In studying humanitarian operations, we will examine the organisation and management of humanitarian agencies, their changing roles internationally and the processes used to identify and then target resources that support humanitarian operations. We focus on key issues relating to humanitarian action and the effectiveness of various interventions in increasingly complex global contexts. We will consider the ethical challenges inherent in humanitarian operations, as well as issues such as sustainability.

  • Incident, crisis and continuity management: We will examine the principles, practices, terminologies and theories associated with incident command, business continuity and crisis management. Incidents, disruptions and crises cause varying degrees of problems within the normal functioning of everyday processes, systems and activities. Effective planning and response requires appropriate decision making, good communications, finely tuned stakeholder management, adaptive management practices, and responsive governance systems. Critical incidents can spill over into political, economic, social, technical, legal and environmental domains. However, they can have a positive impact, if managed well, on the operational, financial, brand, share price, reputations and trust in public, private and not for profit organisations.

  • Post disaster reconstruction: We look at the issues associated with the transition from recovery to development in a post-disaster context. You will develop your knowledge and skills with regards reconstruction of housing, infrastructure, alternative energy sources and critical scientific, managerial and social considerations for interventions in the cycle of pre-disaster, post-disaster and development, within a risk-reduction framework. Particular emphasis will be placed on sustainability and sustainable development concepts.

The programme can be studied full-time over three years of study with the option of extending this to four years, by taking a sandwich year in the form of an industrial training placement or study abroad between Year Two and Year Three.

A wide variety of teaching methods will include: lectures, seminars, small group tutorials, laboratory work, table top and scenario based exercises, fieldwork observations and field management activities in disaster simulations, professional training placement, guided study using textbooks, journals (hard copies and electronic), organisational documents, government legislation and directives via module webs and independent research.

We regularly host expert guest speakers from industry who talk about their experience and current issues in disaster preparedness and response, humanitarian actions, sustainable development and more.

We firmly believe in learning by doing, so you will regularly undertake fieldwork observations. There are field trip opportunities at every level of study, including visits to various Search and Rescue Facilities and the Outreach Training Centre in Wales.

In the final year, there is an opportunity to visit Italy to study Venice’s flood defences, investigate how earthquakes are monitored at Fruili and assess the site of the Vajont Dam disaster. In 1963, during initial filling, a massive landslide caused a manmade megatsunami in the lake in which 50 million cubic metres of water overtopped the dam in a 250-metre wave, leading to the complete destruction of several villages and towns, and 1,917 deaths.

We encourage you to join one of our student societies, such as the International Disaster Concern Society, which will provide further opportunities to gain real experience of working in the humanitarian sector. In the past they have organised trips to Tanzania, and to large-scale emergency exercises, as well as organising additional guest speakers.

This course also gives you the chance to undertake a professional placement. In the past, students have gone to work at IBM, Fujitsu, Octo Crisis Management, Clearview Continuity software and numerous local authority emergency planning teams. Alternatively, you have the option of spending your sandwich year studying abroad and some of our students have previously chosen to study in the Netherlands and Barcelona. 

The learning outcomes of modules, assignments and projects will be clearly stated. Your work will be marked according to how well you achieve these learning outcomes and your final feedback will refer to each outcome, as well as providing an overall percentage grade. You need to achieve an average of 40% or above to pass each module; marks of 70% or above are classified as ‘First Class’.

Assessment methods vary and include written practical reports, course work, timed assignments, presentations, extended essays, research projects and group work.

An estimated percentage breakdown of your final grade assessment is as follows:

On successful completion, you should have knowledge of:

  • The theories and concepts associated with disaster.
  • Processes and systems for disaster intervention (preparedness, response, mitigation) nationally and internationally.
  • Methods of assessment and evaluation used in disaster risk management and associated issues for information and data.
  • Relevant policy, strategy, legislation and associated guidance at local, national regional and international levels.
  • Concepts and issues in UK emergency management science and systems and comparative approaches in more economically developed countries (MEDCs).


On successful completion, you should be able to:

  • Appreciate the complex nature of disaster systems, interactions of society, institutions, politics, economics, technology and the environment.  
  • Assess the status of the individual and community in the context of risk and disaster, the physical environment and interrelationships between society and the environment.
  • Apply appropriate technologies in emergency, disaster and risk reduction interventions.
  • Demonstrate appropriate operating principles of project and incident management and field applications in simulated emergency conditions.
  • Take into account the cultural, ethical and moral implications of your actions.
  • Operate independently and as part of a team in order to solve technical, managerial, logistical problems etc.
  • Conduct field and laboratory work together with data collection and associated investigative and analytical skills.
  • Present information appropriately and professionally (in reports and presentation).
  • Demonstrate a range of transferrable professional skills including: intellectual and problem-solving skills; effective team work; initiative and responsibility your own learning and development; self-reflection; time management and personal organisation, including working to deadlines; excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing. 

In a typical teaching week, you will have up to 16 ‘contact’ hours of teaching. This generally breaks down as:

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 4 hours of small group teaching each week.
  • Medium group teaching: 6 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminar each week
  • Large group teaching: 6 hours of lectures each week.

In addition, you will be expected to undertake a further 20 hours of self-directed study each week.

All students are given the opportunity to complete an overseas field course as part of their studies. In recent years we have visited China, Taiwan and Italy to observe and evaluate emergency management approaches. For example, in Italy, we will investigate how earthquakes are monitored at Friuli, the epicentre of a M6.5 quake in 1976  in which up to 978 people were killed, 2,400 injured and 157,000 were left homeless.

We also have Online International Learning (OIL) projects set up with a leading Dutch University, which has seen our students collaborate on projects to improve intercultural competence, and exchange ideas on emergency planning and Security Management.

Entry Requirements

A Level BTEC IB Diploma GCSE requirement
ABB-BBB DDD-DDM 30 points Minimum 5 GCSEs at A*-C including English Language and Mathematics, or specified equivalents.

A-Levels

A-Level applicants are required to have three
 A2 Levels. Coventry University may include AS grades within an offer for certain courses, but we are not able to accept two AS Levels in place of one A2 Level. In some courses it may be necessary for entrants to have passed specific A2 Levels in nominated subjects. Please see the course pages for more information.

Access Diplomas

The Access Diploma to include 30 Level 3 credits at Merit, plus GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade A*-C, or specified equivalents.

Coventry University welcomes applicants who have completed, or who are studying, the Access to HE Diploma developed by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). Successful completion of the course will require you to gain 60 credits with at least 45 to be achieved at Level 3 (with the remainder at Level 2). In some cases we will require you to have gained Merit or Distinction grades in a number of units or in nominated subjects. BTEC Level 3 Diplomas

The University will accept the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma for entry to most courses. In some cases we will require applicants to have studied either certain named modules or a specific named Diploma. The appropriate course page will have full information on the entry requirements. The University also accepts the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma and BTEC Level 3 Diploma for entry to degree programmes, provided that they are studied in combination with other qualifications that provide a total volume of study that is equivalent to three A2 Levels. For example, you could be studying a BTEC Level 3 Diploma plus an A2 Level, or a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma plus two A2 Levels. Where a specific A2 or BTEC subject is required for entry then you must be offering this as part of your combination of qualifications.

The Contract will detail all of your rights and also the obligations you will be bound by during your time as a student and will also contain all of the obligations that the University owes to you.  We would encourage you to read the Student Contract before you accept any offer of a place at the University. The tuition fees stated on the course webpage, prospectus and your offer letter will apply for the duration of your course, subject only to changes to the law or government requirement. Please note that we set fees for individual courses, and fees from previous years are no indication of fees for future years.
