As the rapid pace of technological change continues, markets expand internationally and legislation becomes increasingly complex, the need to ensure both the business and its personnel adapt accordingly has become ever more important. 

This Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) accredited course is designed for those who want to pursue senior level careers in human resource management (HRM). Human Resource Management (HRM) examines the processes and principles associated with the management of work and people.

HR professionals and managers operate within increasingly complex and changing organisational and contextual circumstances, whether in the market, public or ‘third’ sectors irrespective of the size of their organisations or the types of goods or services provided.  

This programme of study has been designed to meet and reflect the CIPD’s professional standards and expectations, broadening your awareness of HR generalist and specialist functions in a UK and international context, considering how internal and external context impact upon HRM, the role of the HR practitioner and how HRM can lead to better work and better working lives. 

Aiming to give you wide exposure to a range of organisations, you should explore the relationship of HR to other functions in the organisation and the contribution of HR to achieving corporate objectives. The course also includes an optional work placement of a minimum of six to eight weeks within the HRM department of an organisation in the UK. Following a competitive application process, this could provide you with the unique opportunity to assess the theories introduced within the classroom, in the context of a specific work organisational environment. 

The course aims to help you develop a range of academic and employability skills, alongside HRM specific knowledge and understanding in line with the CIPD requirements. For example, students can select from two specialist modules, critical to the employee lifecycle. Modules will also offer experience of applied HR in practice, by developing HR policy or training solutions as part of your learning experience should you wish to develop a specialised focus.

Our main study themes are: 

  • Human Resource Management (HRM) in context: You should gain an understanding of the principal internal and external environmental contexts of contemporary organisations, including the managerial and business context, within which managers, HR professionals and workers interact in conditions of environmental turbulence, change and uncertainty. We will look at how leading organisations respond to these dynamic environmental contexts and how leaders and managers in organisations need to recognise and acknowledge that corporate decisions and HR choices are not always shaped by managers alone, but by internal and external forces beyond their immediate control. 

  • Leading, managing and developing people: We will examine contemporary research on employment and effective approaches to human resource (HR) and learning and development (L&D) practice, including research focusing on the links between people management practices and positive organisational outcomes and major contemporary changes and developments in practice. We will explore the current debates, theory and practice in the specific fields of leadership, flexibility and change management to enable you to become an effective manager as well as an effective HR specialist, managing others fairly and effectively and increasing levels of engagement, commitment, motivation and performance.  

  • Ethical HRM and Human Resource Development (HRD): Standards, values, morals and ethics have become increasingly complex in a post-modern society where absolutes have given way to tolerance and ambiguity. This particularly affects managers in HR, where decisions will affect people’s jobs and their future employment types and the way in recruitment, reward and talent retention practices need to change to reflect cultural diversity of business. We will explore ethical dilemmas encountered in the workplace, discussing ethical behaviour and values that relate to critical human resource development (CHRD), examining current practices in the workplace and their links to corporate social responsibility.

This course can be studied full-time over one year and part-time over two years. The programme is divided into two 10-week semesters starting October and February. Modules will normally be delivered over four days per week with one full day free of classes.

We also encourage you to attend CIPD local branch events, most of which are free of charge to students.  

We provide opportunities for you participate in a range of employability skills development workshops, specifically designed to develop skills required for working in the areas of HR. These feature a range of learning tools: simulation exercises, team building and motivational activities, case studies, and working with specialist guest speakers on a range of problems to develop the competences identified in the CIPD Profession Map. You will also have the opportunity to participate and run assessment centres.

You will study four mandatory modules in Semester One and two mandatory modules in Semester Two, plus a choice of one from two options. In Semester Three, you have the option of undertaking a dissertation or internship. 

Full-time students will receive additional work experience preparation through the ‘Preparing for Work in People Management’ module, receiving support from the Business Partnership Coordinator (BPC) in finding their placement; previous students have worked with Interserve and BNP Paribas. The work placement is a mandatory element for students wanting a CIPD award and is subject to successful completion of the first two semesters. 

You can choose instead to conduct a piece of research and write up a dissertation in your final semester. Past students have covered topics as diverse international reward strategies and ethical practice and the HR professional.

Teaching methods include: lectures, seminars and workshops.

You must undertake and pass all seven mandatory modules, plus two optional modules. Achievement of learning outcomes in the majority of taught modules is assessed by a combination of coursework assignments, policy documents, verbal exams, presentations plus University examinations set in January or May. There are only two exams on the programme as a whole with a range of other assessments designed to provide all students the opportunity to succeed in their chosen field.

An estimated percentage breakdown of your final grade assessment is as follows:

  • Written assignments: 15%
  • Practical coursework: 10%
  • Presentations: 10%
  • Formal examinations: 10%

On the successful completion of 180 level Masters credits, awards may be made with a ‘Distinction’ or ‘Merit’, based on the achievement of an average mark of at least 70% or 60% respectively. Students may be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) if they achieve 120 credits and a Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) if they achieve 60 credits. Students may only progress to the final stage of Masters programmes after meeting the requirements for award of a Postgraduate Diploma.

On successful completion, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of HRM and related subjects outlined in the CIPD HR Profession Map.
  • Appreciate ethical, legal and financial factors and their effects at local, national and international levels upon the strategy, behaviour and management of organisations.
  • Exercise sound judgement in the selection of different methods and approaches available to deal with financial, cultural and legal business problems nationally and internationally.
  • Use financial skills to communicate and work effectively to persuade and influence others to make decisions.

In a typical week, you will have up to 14 ‘contact’ hours of teaching. This generally breaks down as follows:

  • Large group teaching: 1-hour lecture each week per module.
  • Medium group teaching: 2-hour seminar with focused tutor contact each week per module.

In addition, you will be expected to undertake a further 40 hours of self-directed study each week eg. working on course assignments.

The inclusion of internationally-focused case studies helps to foster an international focus across the programme. We look at global organisations, such as Costa Coffee, to understand how their business model impacts on employment practices in different parts of the world. We also promote group working which encourages cross-cultural collaboration and intercultural competency, for example, designing and delivering a group presentation in the ‘HRM in Context’ module.

Students in the past have been offered the opportunity to attend conferences in Italy and Portugal, funded by the Centre for Global Engagement (CGE) and a reciprocal arrangement has been made so that the conference attendees will have the opportunity to come to the next conference to be held in Coventry.

The design of the course is designed to help you select and focus on specific specialist areas of HRM or HRD, depending on your career specific aspirations within the human resources field. Every student within the Faculty has a designated Employment Personal Tutor (EPT), aligned to their area of study, to work with them throughout their course. 

Our Master’s course provides excellent opportunities to progress your career as a Human Resource Manager, Head of Human Resources, Personnel Manager or Performance Consultant. The CIPD qualification is required for nearly all UK-based HR jobs and you will graduate with the knowledge required at advanced level for CIPD membership, which can lead to professional membership at associate, chartered member or fellow levels.
