Some hints on installing and running Tomcat
Falkner J. and Jones K. (2003), Servlets and Java Server Pages: the J2EE Web Tier, Addison Wesley. Chapter 1 includes useable guidance on installing and configuring Java (J2SE 1.4) and Tomcat 5 on Windows (and other) systems (for use stand-alone, without a web server). Chapter 2 deals with servlets but also client/server and HTTP. Chapter 3 deals with JSP but building on servlets.

Hall M. and Brown L. (2004), Core Servlets and JavaServer Pages - Volume 1: Core Technologies, 2nd ed., Sun Microsystems Press/Prentice Hall, ISBN 0-13-009229-0. Very comprehensive reference text but based on servlets. The site will contain sample chapters.
