This is a unique programme which Coventry University offers providing you with a chance to enhance your career by training as a language tutor. Universities, colleges, and companies are always looking for professionally trained teachers who are able to deliver foreign language classes to adults. Not only will you be trained to teach, but during this intensive programme you will also have the opportunity to put this into practice as you deliver sessions in the evenings during weeks 2 and 3.

During the programme, you will:

  • Experience, learn, and adopt learner-centred and communicative teaching approaches
  • Gain the confidence and practical skills for teaching foreign language classes
  • Develop intercultural communication competence – reflecting the 140 nationalities on campus
  • Deliver and observe micro-teaching sessions in the safe and constructive environment of your peers
  • Teach and observe foreign language classes on an intensive summer course

Languages and Teaching

The course includes over 40 hours of input sessions and a unique opportunity to benefit from 30 hours of real life classroom teaching experience. Participants will select one of the following languages that they are native speakers in to train as a tutor

  • Arabic
  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Mandarin
  • Spanish

Our lecturers are trained and qualified teachers of their respective languages with considerable teaching experience. They have in-depth knowledge and experience of language teaching and training provision. The most effective teaching methods are utilized to train you as a language tutor, enhancing skills you need to communicate naturally in the language you would like to teach.

English Language Requirements

You must be a native speaker (or C2 proficiency) in one of the following languages; Arabic‎, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish which you will be training to teach.

You will also be required to have a good level of understanding and speaking in English (from B2/6.0 IELTS) All participants must be aged 18 or above at the start of this programme.


Visa Requirements 

Please note we are unable to provide flights or visas. You will be responsible for ensuring that these arrangements are made before the course starts.

Due to changes in visa requirements, visas may take slightly longer than anticipated so ensure that sufficient time is allowed to apply. Visa advice can be obtained through the UK government website.
