Choosing a Language Course

The Linguae Mundi programme offers 26 different language courses tailored to help you communicate in everyday situations:

We are currently offering courses in: 

Arabic, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Dutch, English, Farsi (Persian), Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Sign Language (BSL), Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Turkish.​

*Please note Language courses are subject to learner demand and tutor availability.

 (Please note there will be a break from 18th December until 12th January)

Please note Members of the Public and Alumni will be required to show proof of eligibility to study in the UK       (ID/Passport checks) and complete enrolment procedures at the University before being admitted on to a course. Registration will be on designated days and times. Currently existing Tier 4 Visa compliance regulations apply to non-EEA/EU nationals.


Minimum Required

Classes are subject to demand. We require a minimum of 5 bookings to run a class.               

(Please note that booking numbers can go down as well as up).

Language course levels

Linguae Mundi offers language courses at different levels. The following table shows the levels and their equivalent on the Common European Framework (CEFR) scale:

Levels Target Audience and Course Content

Beginners CEFR A1

Absolute or false beginners. General language content. Focus on the skills necessary to learn the basics of communication. Learning the basics of the language. Learning about the basics of the target culture. 

Post Beginners CEFR A1+

Learners who have completed a Beginners’ course. General language content. Revision and extension topics taught at Beginners A1 Level. More focus on spoken interaction. More cultural background information. 

Improvers CEFR A2

Learners who have completed a Post Beginners’ course.General language content. Extension of knowledge gained at previous levels. Extension of grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing. Looking at how native speakers of the language communicate verbally and non-verbally. 

Lower Intermediate CEFR B1

Learners with basic conversational ability. General language content with some professional vocabulary and skills. Focus on communicative fluency and introduction of topics related to professional contexts. The basics of language that learners will need at work and in educational settings. 

Intermediate CEFR B1+

More confident learners with basic conversational ability. General language content with some professional vocabulary and skills. Focus on building confidence and extending the basics of professional vocabulary and communication skills. Understanding the professional culture behind the language. 

Upper Intermediate CEFR B2

Learners who can communicate in most everyday situations independently. Professional language content and skills. More emphasis on the language needed for work and in educational contexts. Focus on fluency, pronunciation, reading and writing comprehension. More advanced activities and tasks. 

Advanced CEFR C1 – C1+

Advanced learners who can communicate well and comprehend most of what they hear in conversations in social, educational and professional settings. Higher Advanced professional language content and skills. Focus on improving the skills of already advanced learners and helping them to gain even more advanced comprehension and communication skills so they experience as few barriers as possible when communicating with native-speakers of the language. 


The placement test helps you to determine which language level is best for you. Upon completion of the placement test, you will be provided with a language level recommendation and transferred to the appropriate course.

Course cancellation and transfer deadlines

Thinking about cancelling?

You can cancel your registration up to 14 days after completing your registration. To cancel, you need to send the Linguae Mundi team a clear written statement of your decision to cancel.

If you cancel within 14 days, we will reimburse any related payments (after subtracting a proportional payment for any classes we have already provided).

If you cancel after 14 days, we will not refund the course fee in full or in part. Additionally, if you have registered for a free language course, and you cancel after 14 days, we will charge a £25 administration fee.


If you want to transfer to another language course

Please note that after the first two scheduled lessons for your language course have passed, we will be unable to transfer you to a different language class or language level. Full details of the transfer deadline for your course will be available through Coventry University’s Moodle web and communicated through email before your course begins.
