Flying Start Grant

Flying Start – course essentials at no extra cost

The Flying Start Grant (formerly known as the No Hidden Extras (NHE) grant) is an additional grant to the Centre for Global Engagement (CGE) for all Undergraduate students (1st, 2nd and 3rd year); undertaking international travel during the course of their study.

Eligibility criteria for 2017-2018

  • 1st and 2nd year students receiving full maintenance loan of £6,904 and £8,430.
  • 3rd year students receiving full/partial maintenance grant/special support grant
  • Coventry University Campus students only.
  • Fee band – students should be paying higher tuition fees (P12)
  • Students should not blocked from the University
  • Students on CPD/NHS courses are also eligible
  • Should be a full time student/in a sandwich year
  • Course enrolled for should be part of the Flying Start programme.
  • Current/active Coventry University students only (i.e 3rd year students are considered to be active students until their course end date.)
  • Trip should be funded by Centre for Global Engagement (CGE) - signed contract/confirmation of trip attended.

Funding available

£100 – Trip duration less than 30 days.

£500 – Trip duration 30 days and more.

Other Terms & Conditions

  • Students can be eligible for both grants in one academic year.
  • Students are only eligible to receive the Flying Start Grant of £100 (trip duration less than 30 days) and £500 (trip duration 30 days and more) only once during their course of study
  • Any student who receives a Flying Start Grant for an international trip and is unable to attend the trip will need to refund the grant immediately.
  • Maintenance grant/maintenance loan letter should be for the same academic year as the commencement of the trip.

Students not eligible

  • Students from Coventry University London Campus are not eligible.
  • Students from Coventry University College are not eligible.
  • Students who are blocked/excluded from Coventry University are not eligible.
  • Students who have already received both a £100 Flying Start Grant and a £500 Flying Start Grant are not eligible.
  • Post Graduate students are not eligible

How to access the Flying Start grant payment

When you apply for a CGE grant, please also attach your maintenance grant/ maintenance loan/ special support grant letter with your application.

The letter needs to be for the academic year your trip duration will commence, e.g. if you’re going abroad in the academic year 2016-2017 – then the letter needs to be for that academic year.

Once you have applied for the CGE grant, please notify  to check your eligibility for the Flying Start Grant.
