Flying Start Grant

The Flying Start grant (formerly known as the No Hidden Extras, NHE grant) is additional funding from the Centre for Global Engagement (CGE) for students undertaking international travel during their studies.


Students who qualify in any of these categories can apply:

  • 1st year undergraduate student receiving the maximum maintenance loan.
  • 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate students receiving the full or partial maintenance grant from Student Finance England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Funding available

£100 - Trip duration less than 30 days.
£500  - Trip duration 30 days or more.


Other Terms & Conditions

  • Students must be on the higher fee band.
  • The international trip must be funded by the CGE.
  • They must be on a full time course.
  • They can be eligible for both grants within one academic year.
  • Students are only eligible to receive the £100 (trip duration less than 30 days) and £500 (trip duration 30 days or more) only once during their studies.​ Any student who receives a Flying Start grant(s) for an international trip and is unable to attend will need to refund it immediately.
  • They must be active students of Coventry University (i.e. until their course end date and not graduation date).
  • NHS and CPD course students can apply too.

Students not eligible

  • Coventry University London students
  • Coventry University College students
  • Those blocked or excluded from Coventry University
  • Those who have already received both a £100 and a £500 Flying Start grant.

How to access the Flying Start grant

When you apply for a CGE grant, please also attach your maintenance grant/maintenance loan letter with your application.

The letter needs to be for the academic year of your trip e.g. if you’re travelling in the academic year 2017/18 the letter needs to be for that year.

Once you’ve applied for the CGE grant, please notify get.cge@coventry.ac.uk to check your eligibility for Flying Start grants.
