About the Research Group

Pre-hospital, Emergency & Cardiovascular Care (PHECC)

Co-Directors: Professor Tom Quinn & Professor Malcolm Woollard

Deputy Director: Sonia Godfrey

Established in 2006, PHECC grew from the development of innovative pre-registration and continuing professional development courses related to pre-hospital care.

Professor Tom Quinn is a leading figure in cardiovascular nursing, an adviser to the Department of Health in emergency cardiac care and is cardiovascular and research lead for the West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust (WMAS), and clinical lead for cardiovascular disease and stroke in the NHS National Library for Health.

Professor Malcolm Woollard joined the group in June 2007 as the UK’s first Professor of Pre-hospital Emergency Care. He is the current and founding Chair of the British Paramedic Association research and audit committee, and is an Honorary Consultant Paramedic with WMAS.

PHECC also combines basic science and applied research led by Dr Helen Maddock and therefore enables 'bench to bedside' activity informing improved patient care. The need to reduce healthcare costs, drug induced cardiac toxicity and the requirement for more accurate and effective treatment is resulting in high demand for cost-effective medical devices for monitoring and diagnosis and improved pre-clinical testing of drugs on the cardiovascular system.

PHECC is interdisciplinary, engaging nurses and paramedics along with basic scientists, medical staff, health economists, statisticians, and other disciplines according to the needs of the particular research project.

We are well placed to collaborate on basic sciences, translational research and clinical research. This achieves the twin benefits identified in the University’s Framework of improving the 'health and wealth of the nation'.
