FGS Living Memory Project: Community Liaison Manager Coventry University: Institute for Creative Enterprise

The Institute for Creative Enterprise (ICE) in partnership with Coventry City Council wishes to appoint, on a freelance basis, a community liaison manager for the Far Gosford Street Living Memory Project. This post will be funded by Coventry University and Coventry City Council with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and is dependant on a successful bid to HLF.

Background

Far Gosford Street is one of the few medieval streets which survived the blitz in WW2 and the subsequent redevelopment of Coventry. It is possible to still see the medieval layout of the street and there is a rich archive relating to this early period up to the present day.  As a physical regeneration and conservation programme of Far Gosford Street takes shape, we are encouraging those who live, have lived or have connections with the area, to engage with the past and add their memories to a living archive using new digital technologies.

The Far Gosford Street Living Memory project will engage the people of Coventry with their city's medieval past using the archive as an inspiration and historical context to draw out their own memories and give them a new perspective on their city.  The core of the project is the digitisation of Coventry city's archive as it relates to Far Gosford Street which is a Conservation Area.  The existing archive forms a rich and fascinating catalogue of ownership and occupation records from medieval times to present day and includes maps, drawings and documents.

We are looking for someone who can work with the research team and volunteers responsible for gathering the memories and materials from the local community and assisting them to engage with digital technologies in order to capture their stories. The role also involves liaison with the team at Coventry University responsible for digitising the city's archives, and with the various agencies and enterprises who are working on the regeneration of Far Gosford Street-- including the Council's Regeneration team and its Conservation and Archaeology team; the developers, CDP; and the local traders and residents.

Team

The overall project is being led by Coventry University.  The Project leader is Martin Woolley, Associate Dean, School of Art and Design.  Day-to-day management of the project is the responsibility of Christine Hamilton, Director ICE.  The community liaison manager will work in a team which also includes Ross Varney, Research Assistant: Digital Archiving and Open Media who will be digitisation officer on the project, and Nick Middleton, who is leading the research element of the programme-- both from the School of Art and Design.  There will also be a digital archive project manager engaged on the project

Tasks

We wish to engage a community liaison manager to undertake the following:

  • Develop a key list of organisations and individuals to engage with the project
  • Be first point of contact with key partners, volunteers and other participants and ensure good communication throughout between them and the project team.
  • Develop and implement marketing and communication initiatives in order to raise the profile of the project locally and ensure participation targets are achieved. These to include local groups, networks and organisations in addition to local press.
  • Recruit  participants and oversee engagement of local people to contribute their own narratives to the living memory of Far Gosford Street.
  • Liaise with City Archivist and Conservation and Archaeology Team Leader to select appropriate records for digitisation
  •  Be first point of contact with the project for the local community and agencies and Liaise closely with the project team to ensure smooth delivery of project
  • Raise the profile of the project to the wider general public to enhance Coventry as a visitor attraction
  • Contribute to the ongoing evaluation of the project

A seminar with Howard Skempton and Christopher Hobbs

How is music experimental?

Venue: Institute for Creative Enterprise (ICE), Coventry Technology Park, Parkside CV1 2QR

Tuesday 2nd February 2010 - 12:30-1:30pm

ICE is pleased to welcome Howard Skempton and Christopher Hobbs to talk about their compositions and to discuss the question 'How is music experimental?'

Skempton and Hobbs have been colleagues for over forty years. They studied with Cornelius Cardew in the late 60's and were both among the earliest members of the Scratch Orchestra; their compositions from this time belong firmly in the tradition of British Experimental Music. In this seminar they will play examples of their recent work and discuss what constitutes experimentalism today and whether they still regard themselves as part of it. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to hear two leading composers in their field  talking informally about the context in which they create their music.

To book a place at the seminar event please contact Katie Law on 024 7615 8381 or email: klaw@cad.coventry.ac.uk

This event is free and open to all. Refreshments will be provided.
