Main Duties:
To lead the development and delivery of research in the field of applied English language studies and related areas, including language learning and teaching.
Other responsibilities:
Teaching, supervision of research students and other scholarly activities.

Selected professional activities:
Lead researcher for projects involving the development of the British Academic Spoken English (BASE) corpus and the British Academiuc Written English (BAWE) corpus.

Member of the advisory panel for Macmillan Dictionaries, including:

  • the Macmillan English Dictionary (winner of the British Council Innovation Award 2004 and the Duke of Edinburgh English Speaking Union English Language book Award 2002)
  • the Macmillan School Dictionary CD-ROM and Website (winner of the Duke of Edinburgh English Speaking Union Award for the best use of new technology in English language teaching 2004).

Listening to Lectures was specially commended for its ‘exceptionally high quality in the field of educational technology’ at the European Academic Software Awards in Rotterdam 2000, and won the British Council Innovations in ELT Award in 2003. Seminar Skills 2 was shortlisted for the 2007 British Council Innovations in ELT Award.

Director of the 'English for International Conferences' component of the Chinese University Teacher Training in English (CUTE) project run by the Language Centre of the University of Cambridge and Tsinghua University in Beijing. CUTE is part of HEFCE’s eChina-UK programme which researches e-learning opportunities in China and the UK.
