Summer Internships

Nuffield Foundation Bursaries

Nuffield Foundation Undergraduate Research Bursaries support undergraduates, who are considering research as a career, to work in a research laboratory during the summer vacation before their final year. The bursaries provide student support, normally for a period between 6 and 8 weeks, plus a sum for research expenses. In 2006 330 bursaries were made available to undergraduates.

Over the past three years Cogent has obtained a number of bursaries that have supported students working with us on a variety of our Pervasive Sensing projects. Bursars have usually chosen to continue working with Cogent during their final year thesis projects and one (John Kemp) has recently accepted a PhD studentship with us.

In 2006, bursar Dan Goldsmith is working on network routing in wireless sensor networks, funded by Nuffield grant URB/33386. Dan is using our simulator, SenSor to implement and compare two popular routing algorithms used in querying systems for sensor networks.

In previous years, John Kemp (Nuffield grant URB/02016/G) has simulated locationing algorithms which compare the time-of-arrival of sound and RF signals; Andy Kelly (Nuffield grant URB/02016/G) has worked on real-time operating system support for Cogent sensors and Tim Churchard (Nuffield grant URB/01821/G) has worked on ranging estimates between sensor nodes. Some of our great Nuffield interns have loved us and stayed on for PhD studies.

More information is available from the Nuffield Foundation site.
