Biomechanical Analysis

The Design and Ergonomics Research Group (DEarg) is developing methods to measure and analyse human movement which has applications in ergonomic design, sports performance and injury reduction in the performing arts.

The measurement of human movement is performed using a 12 camera Vicon optical tracking system with a synchronised dual forceplate system.  This enables the accurate measurement of a subject’s movement as well as the force between the subject and the floor. DEarg is researching methods into the calculation of the loads within the muscles of the body based on movement and force data.  This analysis will enable the comparison of individual muscle loads with the load generating capacity of the muscle leading to a reduction in injuries.

This research has recently attracted funding from the Leverhulme Trust to support a project which will study the biomechanics of ballet and Irish dancers as these dance forms are particularly prone to injuries.
