Dr Adrian Bromage
Main Duties:

With a background in Psychology and Cognitive Science, Adrian is experienced in both qualitative and quantitative social research methods and analyses, and an experienced user of software to these ends. He co-facilitates CSHE's Qualitative data analysis workshop with Dr. Turner. Adrian has previously worked on two major education research projects. The largest is the ESRC-funded ETL project, a national research project exploring undergraduate learning and teaching. Adrian was responsible for collaborating with a partner institution in the further education sector. The second was local to Coventry University, the evaluation of the 'Learn Online' initiative.

Current & developing research:

  • The educational foundations of 'serious games'.
  • Consultant researcher for Professor David Jenkins' evaluation of the Teacher Artist Programme, a pan-London programme, part of a three-year action research process bringing together teachers and artists within a reflective professional development framework to investigate the possibilities of partnership working within the school curriculum.
  • A developing local project is an exploration of engineers' conceptualisation of 'truth'. The research will draw upon his experiences on the ETL project.

General research interests:

  • The application and possibilities of Existential Phenomenology.
  • Ontological questions regarding virtual reality and the nature of online teaching.
  • Social sciences research methods, particularly the interplay between ontology and epistemology.
  • Human memory, beliefs, attitudes and attitude change.
  • N-dimensional space and its mapping.
  • Cognitive and user-interface ergonomics.

Role in the iPed Pedagocical Research Network
Contracted on fixed-term concurrent contracts from March 2002 to December 31st 2007, Since 2005, my role includes building research and dissemination capacity by supporting and maintaing the iPed website, and provide practical and collegial support to colleagues undertaking iPed Scholarships, line managed by Dr. Andrew Turner.

Purpose

  • Provide advice, guidance and support to individual colleagues, and groups of colleagues in the University’s Pedagogical Research Network who are engaged in pedagogical research and development.
  • Contribute to the building of research and dissemination capacity in relation to pedagogical research within the University.
  • To engage in pedagogical scholarly activity and produce research outputs as appropriate
Other responsibilities:
  • Provide practical and collegial support to colleagues holding Pedagogical Research Fellowships and Scholarships and to members of the Ped-R Network more generally.
  • Establish, develop and maintain a web-accessible online materials resource portal within CSHE to assist students and staff in the development of Ped-R.
  • Locate relevant Ped-R materials and post to the Ped-R Portal and to the Ped-R Network.
  • Maintain and update the database of Pedagogical Research activity and publication across the university.
  • Assist with evaluation of Ped-R Network activity (impact analysis).
  • Assist with the organisation of staff development activities to assist academic and academic-related staff who wish to become involved in Ped-R activity.
  • Engage in research activity, scholarly publication and networking with peers across the University, and in other institutions, on matters relating to Ped-R and produce measurable research outputs.
