The Project

Coventry University, through our Mobility and Transport Research Centre, are collaborating with HORIBA MIRA to form a new research centre, the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Automotive Research (CCAAR), focussing on intelligent, connected vehicle technology. This project investigates the effectiveness of CAE modelling and simulation tools to support the design, validation and verification of future ADAS, Active Safety and Autonomous Vehicle technologies. The overall scope of the project is to develop a desktop virtual representation of the future HORIBA MIRA proving ground facility that would be used for the evaluation and sign-off of active safety, ADAS and autonomous vehicle systems.

The main objectives of this PhD project can be summarised as:

  • Conduct a comprehensive literature review into relevant areas including active safety, ADAS and autonomous vehicle technologies, vehicle and tyre modelling.
  • Select a benchmark vehicle and collate, using physical measurement and scanning if needed a comprehensive data set that would allow the development of a detailed vehicle model.
  • Scope the extent of the HORIBA MIRA proving ground circuits that will be used in a virtual proving ground model, measure and scan the surfaces and infrastructure as required, develop a CAE digital representation.
  • Develop a systematic method and define the framework for validating and verifying automated vehicle functions.
  • Scope a range of demonstration scenarios and tests for active safety, ADAS and autonomy that will be used to evaluate and demonstrate the developed virtual models and proving ground.
  • Carry out a range of instrumented physical tests using the benchmark vehicle to generate data to inform the development of the virtual model.

About the Centre/Department

Our research in Mobility & Transport works across our faculties and focuses on the design and engineering of future transport systems, including the growing influence of the internet and connectivity. The focus is on inclusive, sustainable and safe transport integrating the strongest research elements in design and engineering. The Centre currently has around 50 staff and 70 PhD students.

Successful Applicants

Successful applicants will have:

  • A minimum of a 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline/subject area with a minimum 60% mark in the Project element or equivalent with a minimum 60% overall module average, or
  • A Masters Degree in a relevant subject area will be considered as an equivalent. The Masters must have been attained with overall marks at merit level (60%). In addition, the dissertation or equivalent element in the Masters must also have been attained with a mark at merit level (60%).
  • The potential to engage in innovative research and to complete the PhD within a prescribed period of study
  • Language proficiency (IELTS overall minimum score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component).


  • Good knowledge of CAE tools and programming skills in Matlab
  • Vehicle dynamics knowledge
  • Understanding of model based control design
  • It is expected the student will divide their time between the University and the C_CAAR research facility based at HORIBA MIRA.
