Disaster risks can be intervened, minimised and reduced by the introduction of a holistic disaster management plan at community level. In particular, effective warning and informing the public potential risks could achieve better results in the disaster mitigation and response. It is believed that the inclusion of DRR curriculum in school education is the most effective way to raise the awareness of relevant skills, knowledge, attitudes and behaviours towards risks reduction and build a safe and resilient culture (UNICEF 2012). Until 2015, 72% of reporting countries has integrated the DRR elements in their school curriculum (UNISDR 2015). Although DRR teaching materials and guidance for teachers are provided (UNICEF 2012; UNESCO/UNICEF 2012), many reports have identified the challenges of implementing and delivering the DRR curriculum in many disaster prone countries. The effectiveness of current arrangement of DRR in the curriculum is unclear (UNESCO/UNICEF 2012; Johnson et al. 2014; Amri et al. 2016). Methodologies for sharing and reusing teaching materials should be developed (UNISDR 2014). A more effective approach for the planning and delivery of the DRR curriculum is required. It is necessary to identify best practice so experiences can be shared among disaster prone countries. The contribution of the research is to establish a holistic framework for DRR education, which is crucial in all countries but increasingly so in the Global South.
About the Centre/Department
The Centre for the Built and Natural Environment is seeking exceptional and motivated scholars who wish to engage with global, policy or industry related research that will demonstrate a measurable sustainable improvement in the performance of the built environment. Our key research themes are: building materials or low carbon technologies including their dynamic performance; new standards of building performance involving owners and occupiers; resilience and adaptation to climate change; or, pervasive data in sensoring and monitoring buildings including human computer interaction. It is our aim to improve the sustainability and performance of the built environment.
Successful applicants will have:
- a taught Masters degree in a relevant discipline, involving a dissertation of standard length written in English in the relevant subject area with a minimum of a merit profile: 60% overall module average and a minimum of a 60% dissertation mark
- the potential to engage in innovative research and to complete the PhD within a three-year period of study.
- a minimum of English language proficiency (IELTS overall minimum score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component)
- a first or good upper second class undergraduate degree in a related social science and a strong interest in pursuing research in this field
- skills in quantitative and qualitative research methods.
