Senior Research Assistant
My research is inspired by aiming to respond to problems and concerns, observations and reflections made by people living in communities and working with them to identify solutions and methods to undertake community based research and action research. I hope to achieve through my work and working collaboratively with others solutions that contribute to social justice and the wellbeing of people who are part of and working with our range of research projects.
Kusminder Chahal has been an active researcher for over 23 years, working in a variety of settings ranging from local government, consultancies, community projects and higher education. His research interests have largely been focused on exploring the lived experience of racist victimisation and hate crimes and practical responses for victims; working in local communities to identify local needs and contribute to actioning those needs; undertake ethnographic inspired research in everyday situations to explore multiculture, social relations and diversity. Kusminder’s research on racist victimisation and victim-led services contributed to a national charitable trust setting aside £1M funding for community-based projects working directly with victims of racist hate. Kusminder’s work on racist victimisation has been described as “essential reading”. He has trained over 450 community activists as community-based researchers and trained over 4000 professional on equality and diversity.
