Adults urged to get back on the learning ladder

Would be adult learners are being encouraged by Coventry University Coventry (CUC) to find out more about the study options available to them by attending education open days taking place in the city next week.

The open days, which are being held at the college’s city centre campus on Saturday 14 June and the Central Library on Tuesday 17 June, form part of Adult Learners’ Week 2014, a national campaign promoting the benefits of lifelong learning, which runs from Saturday 14 to Friday 20 June.

Coventry University Coventry, which draws on the experience and resources of the city’s university and which is based on its campus, offers an alternative to the traditional higher education route with a range of courses all delivered in a flexible way to suit the learner’s needs.

CUC staff will be at both events and will be joined at Coventry’s Central Library by colleagues from Coventry University, Coventry City Council, City College Coventry, the University of Warwick and others to offer advice and support to those interested in the different types of opportunities available to adult learners.

John Dishman, Pro-Vice-Chancellor CU Group, said:

Adult Learners’ Week promotes the many positive benefits that lifelong learning offers and we’re delighted to be taking part in this campaign.

There are lots of good reasons for adults to start studying again. Education offers opportunities for career development of course but it can also be fun and it can help people to broaden their horizons. They can also make new friends along the way.

Whatever the reason, I hope as many people as possible from the local community will come along to these open days to find out more about what’s on offer.

Police Officer Ross Campbell, 33, joined the force when he was 18 and has recently returned to education. He is currently studying a part-time degree in Policing at Coventry University Coventry.

Ross said:

Studying part-time as an adult learner at Coventry University Coventry has so many benefits. It’s local, it’s affordable and I can arrange study around my shifts.

I joined the police service when I was 18 and while I knew I could always get a degree afterwards, I didn’t expect it to be 14 years later. But the degree I’m studying is totally relevant to my job and will enhance my prospects in the long-term.

I’d certainly encourage others who are thinking about returning to education to take advantage of the open days that are coming up. There are lots of options available to them.

Coventry University Coventry’s open day for adult learners takes place at its premises on Gosford Street in Coventry City Centre on Saturday 14 June from 10am to 1pm. A further open day is being held at the Central Library, Smithfield Way, Coventry from 10am to 4.30pm on Tuesday 17 June.
