As the Cassidy Coventry Blaze prepare for a new season, Coventry University looks forward to continuing the successful working relationship which enables Blaze players to play and study for a degree.

The partnership between The Blaze and the University has proved so popular that some players have joined the team because it gives them the opportunity to continue their academic studies.

There are five players involved in the scheme; four Canadians, who are currently studying for a Masters degree from the Business School, Neal Martin, Reid Simonton, Trevor Koenig and Adam Calder along with Steve Fone from the UK who is receiving a sports scholarship.

Netminder, Koenig came to Coventry from the Newcastle Vipers and is one of the Blaze key summer signings.

The University’s successful partnership with the Blaze means that Koenig, aged 31, will be able to continue his academic studies at Coventry University’s Business School through a scheme that has helped to bring many top class players to the city.

Koenig said:

"There are several reasons why I chose to come to Coventry. Firstly, the Blaze has a great tradition and fan base, secondly, I wanted to work with Head Coach, Paul Thompson and finally, I liked the fact that I had the opportunity to study for my Masters at Coventry University.

Professor David Noon, Co-Dean of the Faculty of Business, Environment and Society said:

"Our partnership with the Cassidy Coventry Blaze is unique. We are keen to help in whatever way we can to ensure that the Blaze can continue to attract top class international players and in return, we are able to involve Blaze players in promotional and educational activities at the University."

Last season, The Blaze reached the finals of both the Challenge Cup and the Knockout Cup but they were beaten in a dreaded penalty shoot-out in both games.

Professor Noon added:

"The University will be supporting the Blaze during the forthcoming Elite League season and we look forward to celebrating with them when they pick up some silverware this year!"
