Biometric Residence Permit

What is a Biometric Residence Permit?

As part of your visa process you will be issued a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP). This is a secure card that is proof of your right to be in the UK as a student for more than 6 months

Your BRP will contain personal and biometric information. This includes:

  • Name, date and place of birth
  • Fingerprints and a photo of your face
  • Immigration status and any conditions of your stay
  • Any access to public funds

Who needs a BRP?

You need a BRP if you have applied for permission to come to the UK for more than 6 months.

How to apply for a BRP?

You do not have to apply separately for a BRP. It is part of your visa process.

Will I receive my BRP before I arrive in the UK?

No. Before you arrive in the UK you will receive a decision letter, which will show that you need a BRP and this will be collected. Keep this letter safely in your hand luggage when you travel to the UK. You may be asked to show this letter with your passport and visa when you arrive at the airport.

Where can I collect my BRP in the UK?

Your collection location will depend on the information you provide in your visa application. Your decision letter will confirm your location.

We recommend you collect your BRP from Coventry University – especially for all students under the age of 18.

Alternatively, you can collect your BRP from a local post office.

You must collect your BRP within 10 days of your arrival in the UK and you must bring the following:

  • Passport, decision letter and document with your vignette

i. Collecting from Coventry University

To collect your BRP from the university, you must enter our unique code into the ‘Alternative Location’ field on the BRP Collection page. See our example.

Coventry University unique code: 2HE 452

ii. Collecting from a local post office

Your decision letter will confirm which post office you have to collect your BRP from. Use our map to view the post offices in the Coventry city centre area.

If you arrive before enrolment begins

If you arrive before enrolment begins you can still collect your BRP. Nearer the time, we will upload a list of student numbers for you to check if your BRP is ready to collect. If your student number is listed, just come to the Student Centre during our usual opening hours to collect your card.
