The QAA Benchmarks for Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research are currently being drawn up by the Benchmarking Group. The presentation will give a report on progress to date.
2.20 p.m. The role of QAA Benchmarks in Subject Reviews
Speaker: Mike Laugharne, Quality Assurance Agency
Speaker: Richard Bridges, King Edward’'s School, Birmingham
The talk will present the main issues discussed by the group, and the main conclusions of its report, now nearing publication.

4.00 p.m. "Departments under threat"
Speaker: Walter Middleton, University of Sunderland
A presentation of the results of a recent survey of changing resources in
mathematics departments.
4.40 p.m. "Is A level Mathematics what it used to be?"
Speaker: Dr Duncan Lawson, Coventry University
Results form the 1990s of a diagnostic test for incoming students will be presented. The results are broken down by entry qualification to allow a comparison between the performance of students entering university at the end of the decade with the same qualifications as those entering at the start of the decade.
