MINUTES OF COMMITTEE MEETING HELD AT 12.00 ON 24 MARCH 1997 AT
KEELE UNIVERSITY


Present:        Professor Mike Atkinson (St Andrews), Professor Martin 
Everett (Greenwich), Professor Ken Houston (Ulster), Dr Ekkehard 
Kopp (Hull), Dr Adrian Lepper (IMA), Dr Allan Norcliffe (Sheffield 
Hallam), Professor Alan Ryley (Glamorgan), Dr Stephen Ryrie (West of 
England), Professor Graham Wilks (Keele), Professor Chris Wright 
(Middlesex) and Professor Alan Zinober (Sheffield).



1.      Apologies

2.      Minutes of Meeting, 13 January 1997

Approved.



3.      Matters Arising from the Minutes

There were no matters arising.



4.      Conference Update

Graham Wilks outlined the arrangements and the proposed format for
the invited presentations.



5.      Review of Nominations

Chris Wright reported on the current position (see minutes of AGM). The 
issue of securing the services of a suitable Chairman was discussed (see 
Item 7).

The AGM would be asked to approve an interim arrangement regarding 
chairmanship of the Committee.  The Vice-Chairman would convene the 
first Committee Meeting and a Chairman would be nominated and put to 
the membership for approval by Email.

In addition the following were coopted onto the Committee:  Dr Adrian 
Lepper (IMA), Professor David Crighton (CPAM), Professor Ken Brown (IMS), 
Professor Adrian Smith (RSS).


6.      Incorporated Engineer

This item was deferred until the next Committee Meeting.



7.  Amendment to Constitution.

Chris Wright reported on the requirements for carrying through the proposed 
change in Constitution and the form the wording would take. The aim was to 
widen membership of HoDoMS to retired members to play a substantial role on 
the Committee, given the increasing pressures on Heads of Department 
currently in post.



8.      Any other business.  There was no other business.



9.      Date of Next Meeting:  Monday, 22 September, 1997, at 11.45 in the 
Library of the Mathematics Department at UCL.
