This page was last updated on 29 July
2010.
I would start with
Douglas Butler's site TSM Resources not only
for mathematics but also for other fantastic goodies. Start with
For the Busy Teacher. The maths pages contain a
comprehensive list of international associations and magazines, fantastic
classroom
resources including
300 mathematical java applets from Japan, and the famous Waldo Maths
by Ron Barrow of Tunbridge Wells,
mathematical
entertainment, and probability/statistics/data.
There are links to subject specific sites
plus a general reference site which is worth a quick visit just to see, neatly listed, the
very wide variety of useful sites on offer including good schools
sites.
- EMaths for teachers & students: Mark McCourt shares best
practice in maths education.
- Count
On site is the continuation of the Maths
Year 2000 site.
- The Futures Channel , one of my favourites, short video
clips relating maths and real life.
- Travels in a mathematical world about maths at work are podcasts from the IMA
- GeoGebra ?It's free
but the disadvantage is that it is not Autograph.
- Fibonnaci the site to visit
must be Ron Knott's.
- The BBC maths site offers bite sized help and a series of short pages on maths in life.
- The Maths Enhancement Programme of The Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching has
many resources developed as part of the including lesson
plans, and web links for ciphers, braille, postcodes, bar codes and
vehicle registration marks to name but a few. They really are
worth a visit - find them all under Bletchley Park codes .
- RaceMaths , produced at Cranfield
University, with topics linked to motor sport, including of course
mechanics, but it starts at key Stage 1
and includes interviews with people in the sport, as well as footage of
a race crash - fortunately the driver was unhurt!
- Utah State University has a National Library of Virtual Manipulatives
which sounds a bit grim, but try the balancing equations to get a flavour.
- Footrule is about units and measures, from Imperial and
metric to book sizes and hay bales.
- Time and Date has time zones,
calendars, dates or your next big birthday in seconds.
- Paper models of polyhedra with free
nets to print out for non commercial purposes provided by Gijs Korthals
Altes.
Sites with lots of resources:
Hemsworth Arts and Community College Mathematics
Faculty is a site and a half
with some excellent PowerPoint tips.
Kangaroo maths has many free resources for
all key stages.
Braincells is a resource for students, with lots of worksheets
and PowerPoint, but may not be used other than for private study.
Sites that are more interactive are:
- That
quiz is a compendium of interactive
quizes covering topics from number to
calculus.
- A lovely site is Subtangent with lots of revision stuff, and self testing stuff that is fun.
Suitable for classrooms or private study. It includes a version of
Countdown and Mathionnaire.
- A Maths Dictionary for
Kids is another bright and clear site by
Jenny Eather from Australia.
- Coolmath.com describes
itself as an amusement park of math designed for fun. A bit bright for
finding the way around but lots on algebra.
- A similar starter might be Ten Quick Questions which provides 10 questions on a topic you choose.
This is free downloadable software from CSF
software, run by Chris Farmer who is a UK
mathematics teacher. NB the free version is no longer
supported or updated.
- The games section of the LT Scotland 5-14 site provides interactive games by level and topic such as number,
shape, problem solving. Many do require either the Macromedia
Flash or Shockwave plugins for your web browser. To sharpen my mental
agility I like MATHO addition under Number, money and
measurement level D.
Games and educational fun
- If you are looking for something new, Maths Net games indicates which are the
newest, and has a complete listing on one page plus daily puzzles.
- The Nrich games section allows you to search by challenge level, and if you like
games try the frog puzzle.
- Do try the Algebra versus the
cockroaches challenge. Excellent and
entertaining practice in finding the equationof a straight line.
- MangaHigh, with Marcus de Sautoy, has
great games.
- Super Maths World is an interactive, and
visually lively site of maths games.
- Murderous Maths is a
site with the wonderful football team illusion
and lots of mathemtical tricks with calculators
and cards. Stuff to impress.
- The Set Puzzle provides a
daily colurful puzzle challenging you to find the sets - it is not as
easy as you might think and is good for stretching the brain.
- Ambleside Primary School
is just such fun with so many games to improve
numeracy skills. I enjoy the simplicity and power of finding the angle, an
interactive protractor.
- Aplus Math has simple but good
multiplication and addition games.
- Pi day is 14 March. Here's
a selection of related sites such as the YouTube sites: The Pi Song,
another Pi song ,
a Pi rap,
