The Basic Idea

Consider the activities that must be carried out in a project to launch a new product:

A. Prepare initial designs
B. Make prototypes
C. Test prototypes
D. Finalise design
E. Set up production line
F. Train operators
G. Produce first batch

The diagram below shows the sequential order in which the activities would be carried out, and where activities could be carried out in parallel to save time.  The nodes, called events, represent stages of the project at which all preceding activities have been completed, and thus succeeding activities can commence.

We can use this type of diagram to manage and control large scale projects, which are likely to run over many months, or even years.

In the case of a complex project, such a network model can be used:

to predict accurately the project duration;

to highlight critical activities, which cannot be extended without delaying completion of the project;

to plan and smooth the utilisation of resources throughout the project;

to answer "What if ... ?" type questions, e.g. delays in certain activities;

as an aid to communication - the network has an immediate visual impact and is easy to understand.
