Seaside Holidays Long

Ago

In the 1800s people didn’t go on holiday to the seaside. Following the example of the Royal Family, people later began to visit the coast for health reasons.

The invention of railways meant that some people could travel to the seaside by steam train. It was very expensive but quite an adventure!

Swimming has always been a very important part of seaside holidays. In the past rich people used bathing machines as a place to change and from which to enter the sea.

Apart from swimming, people visiting seaside resorts enjoyed Punch and Judy shows, walks along the promenade, donkey rides and a variety of amusements on the pier.

Holidaymakers ate shellfish and jellied eels. They bought souvenirs from gift shops to remind themselves of a happy holiday.
