In the 1800s people didn’t go on holiday to the seaside. Following the example of the Royal Family, people later began to visit the coast for health reasons. |

The invention of railways meant that some people could travel to the seaside by steam train. It was very expensive but quite an adventure! |

Swimming has always been a very important part of seaside holidays. In the past rich people used bathing machines as a place to change and from which to enter the sea. |
|
|
Apart from swimming, people visiting seaside resorts enjoyed Punch and Judy shows, walks along the promenade, donkey rides and a variety of amusements on the pier. |
|
Holidaymakers ate shellfish and jellied eels. They bought souvenirs from gift shops to remind themselves of a happy holiday. |
