School Days

The diary of a young woman living and growing up in late Victorian Britain brings to life the history of the period.

‘This is the beginning of Maggie Johnson’s diary. Today, in school, Miss Bates gave me this book and said I should start writing a diary, writing down the things that happen to me and what I think about things. I am not sure where to start so I shall begin with myself.’

Working Conditions

The work does not tire me but I have to trap without a light and I'm scared. I never go to sleep.

Sometimes I sing when I've a light but not in the dark.

I dare not sing then. I don't like being in the pit.
