Research Projects

Research expertise within BIOCORE spans a number of health-related areas. The following is a selection of topics which are currently being investigated with a number of national and international partners.

• Cancer bioinformatics and intelligent data mining
• Epidemiological and aetiological studies
• Image cytometry, histopathological image analysis and visualisation
• Microsensor applications in biomedical systems
• Agent-based telemedicine
• Multimedia information systems for medical decision support
• Design of dental epidemiological databases
• Clinical Knowledge Management
Biomedical ceramic implants
• Biomedical scaffolds for tissue engineering
• Micromanufacturing
• Medical product and device design
• Computer aided engineering (CAE) techniques in healthcare

The following is a representative sample of collaborative projects undertaken by the group:

Non-invasive diagnosis of lymph node metastasis in breast cancer patients (in collaboration with the Cancer Research Unit, the Departments of Surgery and Pathology, Newcastle University, UK, and the Departments of Pathology and Anatomy, University of Milan, Italy)

Investigation into the correlation of disease progression with the metastasis-associated genes h-mts1 and nm23 in carcinoma of the breast (in collaboration with the Cancer Research Unit, Newcastle University, UK, and the Departments of General Pathology and Anatomy, University of Milan, Italy)

Analysis of varying effects of histopathological and immunohistochemical parameters on survival of breast cancer patients (in collaboration with the Cancer Research Unit and the Departments of Surgery and Pathology, Newcastle University, UK)

Identification of prominent biological and experimental markers (p53, bcl-2, WAF-1) to predict outcome for patients with prostate cancer (in collaboration with the Department of Urology, University of Sheffield, UK)

Analysis of incidence of disease recurrence and/or progression in different stages of bladder cancer (in collaboration with the Nephrology and Urology Centre, Mansoura, Egypt)

Identification and classification of colorectal tumour cells (in collaboration with the Regional Medical Physics and Pathology Departments, Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK)

Modelling invitation intervals for breast screening (in collaboration with the Coventry & Warwickshire Breast Screening Unit, Coventry, UK)

Assessment of prognostic outcome in ovarian cancer (in collaboration with the Department of Gynaecological Oncology, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead, UK)

Interactive multimedia system for breast awareness (in collaboration with University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, Coventry, and WMG, University of Warwick, UK)

Analysis of diabetic retinopathy (in collaboration with the George Eliot Hospital, Nuneaton, UK)

Predictive analysis of perinatal and neonatal databases (in collaboration with Carleton University and Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Canada)

Analysis of Hereditary Non-Polyposis Colon Cancer (HNPCC) based on genetic and familial databases (in collaboration with the Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada)

A Knowledge Management approach to breast cancer screening prediction (in collaboration with the Coventry & Warwickshire Breast Screening Unit, Coventry, UK)
