Software Engineering BSc Honours degree
The core of the degree is the focus on “Software Engineering” the name given to the science of designing, developing and delivering complex computer systems. This part of computing is enthralling due to the diversity of software projects that exist, from computer systems that control millions of flights to mobile phones systems to banking finance systems, the list is extensive. All of the teams that design develop and deliver these computer systems rely on the skills of the software engineer.
Reasons to choose Software Engineering BSc Honours degree
- Accredited by the British Computer Society this honours degree will establish you as a software engineer who will be in demand from software project teams in a diversity of sectors.
- A programme that builds on fundamental areas of computer science i.e. data acquisition; data, storage and data processing together with software engineering and computer operation. A key feature of the degree is the production of software using rigorous methods and appropriate tools for specifying, designing, programming, testing and documenting information systems.
- Includes special course features that give a profound understanding of the way that people and organisations interact with computers and the design of and management of network systems that support large and small organisations. Option modules in system security, internet technology and real-time systems are also available.
- Active research groups within the faculty including COGENT, the computing applied research centre, have created a leading edge curriculum which incorporates advances in computer science as a result of research and conference proceedings.
- Teaching and learning is Activity Led by a team of highly qualified software engineers and computer professionals within state of the art computing facilities.
- Opportunities exist to attend our CISCO Academy to gain a CCNA networking qualification or broaden your subject base via special advantage modules.
- Industry placement an excellent record of placing students in leading industries at companies such as Electronic Data Systems
- E-learning support environment.
- University Direct Entry Scholarships
- Immediate post graduate opportunities exist on completing this course.
Future prospects
Governments and large companies continue to activate new computer systems therefore demand will remain for highly qualified graduates to take lead roles in the design, development and delivering computer systems. Possibilities exist for post graduate study.Entry requirements
For first year entry, you will normally have at least 5 passes in GCSE examinations, including grade C or higher in Mathematics and English together with 240 Tariff points. We are happy to consider any qualification equivalent to this which demonstrates your ability to benefit from a degree programme.Applications from students aged 21 and over will be considered on their individual merits and the capability to succeed and benefit from the course will be the main criterion for entry. Due credit will be given for relevant previous work and learning experiences. Students whose first language is not English should have achieved a minimum English language standard of TOEFL 550 or IELTS 6.0.
