Automotive Engineering MSc/PgDip degree (part time course)
In the modern world of vehicle design and manufacture companies require engineers who are highly qualified and possess very specialised skills. Engineers working in the Automotive industry may be employed by a major vehicle manufacturer, its supply chain or one of the many consulting firms providing design, analysis and testing services. Rapid advances in vehicle technology over recent years have been driven by a demanding worldwide marketplace. The main requirement, for a competitive manufacturer, has been to develop vehicles that are economic, have high levels of refinement and performance and provide advanced additional features.
Developing vehicles to this standard requires extensive computer based engineering design and analysis, supported later in the vehicle development cycle by rigorous testing and measurement of performance. The course proposed here not only addresses the overall design of a vehicle but will also introduce participants to various specialised areas of Automotive Engineering.
The course aims are:
- To prepare participants for productive careers as Automotive Engineering specialists in a wide range of engineering, manufacturing, ane service organisations.
- To develop skills and expertise in the technologies involved in Automotive Engineering.
- To develop particular expertise in adopting an integrated multidisciplinary approach to engineering projects in the Automotive Engineering sphere of influence.
- To achieve a better understanding of system design methodologies required when working under an Automotive Engineering philosophy.
- To provide the opportunity to practise skills in Automotive Engineering through the application to real engineering projects undertaken in conjunction with industry or research groups.
Reasons to choose Automotive Engineering MSc/PgDip degree (part time course)
Enhance your qualifications and release your potential to move your company forward.

Faculty of Engineering and Computing
The Faculty of Engineering and Computing is a major UK centre for engineering, computing and mathematics education and research. It is a lively place where we pride ourselves in the strong links we have with industry, our ‘real-world’ approach and our commitment to helping all our students achieve their fullest potential.
The Faculty benefits not only from excellent teaching and research facilities – including a national Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Mathematics support – but from strong links with industry, commerce and universities worldwide. Our emphasis on focused, collaborative programmes continues to strengthen our status and the ability to provide solutions for business to assist industry in achieving world-class performance. Our collaborative ventures with companies such as Jaguar, Land Rover and IBM, as well as many hundreds of small and medium sized enterprises, not only help us remain at the forefront of technological advances, but ensure we keep pace with employers’ changing expectations.
Teaching and Learning Resources
Courses are taught in our excellent Graduate and CPD centre, which provides first rate classroom and social facilities particularly designed for part-time students who may be coming to study after work.Classes are taught by academics with a long track record of working with part-time students and who bring in leading industry experts wherever that is possible. The University Library is only a short walk from the Graduate and CPD centre and therefore very easy to access either before or after class and at weekends.
Entry requirements
You will normally be expected to have an honours degree but entry qualifications are flexible for mature candidates with industrial experience. We are always willing to talk to you about your experience and look at how that may be credited against the academic requirements of certain programmes.
Course content
This course has been designed with the industrial part-time delegate in mind, indeed we talked with our industrial partners when developing the material. Each course consists of 9 modules and a project. The modules are studied in a block mode, one module at a time. This means that you focus on one subject and complete it before moving on to the next.Attendance can be part-time day, or part time evening, with 30 hours (MSc) contact time in total per module. The evening modules are delivered only to part time delegates which gives great opportunity to share experiences and network between other industries.
Part Time Day attendance: ½ a day for 2 weeks
Part Time Evening attendance: 2 evenings per week, 5 weeks per module.
You will normally study for 3 years with an optional exit point at the end of each year. The course structure is shown below:
Year 1 5 modules
Year 2 4 modules
Year 3 An individual industry based project
Assessment
Each module is assed by an individual assignment, which in many instances can be work based, giving you the opportunity to assess your own company and make recommendations for improvements.
The course has the following modules:
Taught Modules
- Advanced Manufacturing Processes and Materials (day time mode only)
- Safety, Structures and Impact (day time mode only)
- Finite Element Analysis (day time mode only)
- Noise Vibration and Harshness (day time mode only)
- Power Train (day time mode only)
- Component Durability Testing and Simulation (day time mode only)
- Vehicle Aerodynamics (day time mode only)
- Vehicle Electrical Systems (day time mode only)
- Vehicle Dynamics, Handling and Simulation (day time mode only)
- Research methods and study skills
In addition participants must satisfactorily complete an individual project
