Internet and Enterprise Computing BSc Honours degree
This new course emphasises the application areas found in modern enterprises as well as the computing technologies needed to support these areas and the network and internet infrastructure that underlie them.
This is a computing course which focuses on systems that link applications and businesses across the internet. A host of new technologies have emerged in recent years which allow us to build internet systems and we see these sorts of systems more and more each day. Such systems may be global in that parts of the system can be located anywhere in the world but end users do not necessarily know how the system is distributed or networked. You will learn how to build such systems.
There will also be an emphasis on corporate systems which integrate all of a company’s computing needs and application areas. Such systems are often called enterprise systems. A new method of allowing interoperation between systems that have been developed on different computers by different companies is called service-oriented or services computing, the idea being that different companies offer electronic services that other companies can easily tap into using supporting web based technologies such as XML and SOAP. These are the new areas that will be emphasised in the course alongside the important traditional areas of computer systems, networks, programming, information management and usability.
Reasons to choose Internet and Enterprise Computing BSc Honours degree
- Breadth of knowledge and skills that are covered
- Inclusion of modern application areas, e.g. multimedia, mobile computing and services computing
- Wide range of optional pathways that students can select
- Significant development of interpersonal and project management skills
- Optional third year of paid industry or business placement
- Major focus on Internet Systems
Entry requirements
5 GCSEs at grade A-C including Mathematics and English Language and 240 Tariff points from two or more 6-unit awards or eqivalent qualificationsCourse content
This course is a specialisation within our computing/computer science group of courses. It shares a common first year with these other courses. Students can transfer between courses at the end of their first year. In the first year you gain a good foundation in computing and computer science.
In the second and third years you will specialise in internet technologies, distributed applications and enterprise systems development, and database systems. A range of optional modules is also available. You will participate in a group project and as a final-year Honours student you will undertake an individual project involving internet and/or enterprise systems.
The degree is available as a three-year full-time course or as a four-year sandwich course. In the sandwich option, the professional training period takes place in the third year, subject to the University (or you) being able to find a suitable placement. A programme of professional development will be worked out by your supervisor in the company and by your professional training tutor from the University who will visit you at regular intervals to help you reflect and learn from your experiences in practice.
You will normally study six modules (or equivalent) each year. We encourage students to take a great deal of responsibility for choosing their own course and managing their own work. Emphasis is placed on teaching you how to learn and providing you with adaptable skills which can be applied and developed further in your professional career. You will encounter a range of teaching and assessment styles; individual and group work, studio, laboratory and seminar discussions; report writing, presentations, and displays.
