Network & Mobile Computing BSc Honours degree
What technology should a company use to move data between its branches? What do I need to transmit live video over the internet? Is wireless better than wire?
This course concentrates on giving you an understanding of the technology, security and management issues associated with computing in a network environment. It looks at the design and support of Internet applications, managing distributed databases and designing suitable network architectures.
Reasons to choose Network & Mobile Computing BSc Honours degree
We introduce you to how basic computer hardware works and the technology behind networks both wired and wireless. You will develop skills in designing computer networks, correcting network problems and applying network management techniques.
You will learn about distributed and client/server models, Internet environments, distributed data systems and the balancing of bandwidth, security and reliability. All of this will be built on a firm foundation in computer science which needs a working knowledge of software design, user interfaces and information systems.
- Professional accreditation by British Computer Society
- Optional CISCO Network Academy qualifications.
- Full underpinning of modern computer science
- Unique treatment of network configuration and management
- Significant development of interpersonal and project management skills
- Optional third year of paid industry or business placement
Future prospects
Job opportunities for network specialist are burgeoning with an increasing need for network designers, network and distributed systems managers, Internet technologists and computer security specialists in a wide range of conventional and ecommerce organisations.
This course is accredited by the British Computer Society and has exemption from that professional body’s entry examinations.
Entry requirements
For first year entry, you will normally have at least 5 passes in GCSE examinations, including grade C or higher in Mathematics and English together with 240 Tariff points including at least two six-unit awards. We are happy to consider any qualification equivalent to this which demonstrates your ability to benefit from a degree programme.
Applications from students aged 21 and over will be considered on their individual merits and the capability to succeed and benefit from the course will be the main criterion for entry. Due credit will be given for relevant previous work and learning experiences. Students whose first language is not English should have achieved a minimum English language standard of TOEFL 550/213 or IELTS 6.0.
