Coventry University Scarborough Campus Open Event

The first major open event for the new Coventry University Scarborough Campus has been hailed as a great success by the organisers.

The open day and launch of the new courses at Scarborough Spa attracted hundreds of people and the University received more than 100 serious enquiries – with around 20 signing up for courses on the spot.

Professor Craig Gaskell, Provost of Coventry University Scarborough Campus, said the early response had been excellent and they were looking forward to applications continuing to be made from this point.

We are delighted with the numbers and mix of people who came to see what we are offering. The message that we are coming to town and are bringing a new way of learning has certainly hit home and been very well received.

We had local people as well as some from outside Scarborough and across the region, and there was interest in the range of courses with law, health and education proving especially popular.

There was also very strong interest in our access and foundation courses which allow people who might not already have the right qualifications, to build up to studying at degree level.

The feedback was very positive. People realise that we are offering the chance to study in a great location for a degree from the country’s leading modern university, for a fee of less than £6,000 per year which is much lower than many comparable courses.

This is about increasing accessibility for suitably qualified students and providing much enhanced long-term career prospects in an area that needs more people qualified to degree level.

We will build up to around 300 students in our first year, but once our new campus is open the number could, in time, grow to around 5,000. Already that is bringing a positive impact to the area and we are recruiting staff ahead of our September start.

Based upon the high-quality and low-cost career focused model of higher education pioneered in Coventry, the new University aims to address the employment and skills needs of the Yorkshire Coast as well as attracting students from the wider Yorkshire region and beyond.

Courses will be delivered during the first academic year of 2015/16 from landmark venues in Scarborough ahead of the new £14 million purpose-built university campus aimed to open in September 2016, as part of the planned new sports and education facility on the former Weaponness park and ride site in the town.

Applications through UCAS are now being taken for courses available from this September including management and leadership, health, childhood development, accounting, law and policing.
