Many aspects of how we understand science have changed dramatically over the past 100 years. With innovative discoveries and continuous development at the heart of scientific industries, the demand for people trained in both biological and chemical sciences is on the rise.

Designed to equip you with the intellectual and technical building blocks to kick-start your career, this course offers a progressive, experimental and modern introduction to the compelling arena of biological and chemical sciences.

This course blends the study of human biology with the rigorous techniques used in scientific laboratories, including analysis of blood, dissection, drug synthesising and chemical growth.

One of the main aims of the course is to ensure our students are equipped with full comprehension of popular areas of biological and chemical science such as microbiology, genetics, cell biology and human physiology, whilst simultaneously developing integral practical skills associated with the industry.

The breadth of this course reflects the blurring boundaries between biological and chemical sciences.

The course itself has been designed to provide students with a range of skills and knowledge that is necessary in today’s multidisciplinary environment. It also offers a unique insight into human life processes, starting at a cellular level and progressing to advanced pathophysiology of disease, equipping you will all the necessary knowledge to become an employable Bachelor of Science.

Overview

As an introduction to the programme, you will cover the fundamentals that underpin biological and chemical sciences, including aspects of cell biology, chemistry and physiology. Within this multi-disciplinary year, you’ll develop an understanding of the core schools of scientific research, key technical practices and their applications within the health sector. Students who complete year one are awarded a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Biological & Chemical Sciences

Modules

  • Cell Biology

    To start the year, you will begin with cell biology. You will be introduced to the eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell structure and functions, whilst exploring topical themes within the laboratories such as the emergence of multiple antibiotic resistant bacterium.

  • Infectious Disease and Parasitology

    You will gain an understanding of various pathogenic micro-organisms and parasites. You’ll study the biology of pathogens as causative agents of infectious diseases, while assessing and studying the human immune response. This topic is underpinned with practical elements and useful workshops, so that you get first-hand experience and knowledge of cells.

  • Anatomy and Physiology

    In this compelling module, you’ll firstly be introduced to human systems and the complex principles that dictate physiological functions. You are required to undertake critical analysis of diseases that affect human systems, underpinned by modern research and showcasing innovative thinking in these areas.

  • Chemistry

    Set in our advanced laboratories, you’ll be introduced to the fundamentals of electronic structure, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. You’ll explore properties of chemical substances and specific chemistry sessions related to s, p and d-block elements, the compounds, alterations, reactions and chemical reactions.

Overview

In the second year, you are working at a higher, advanced level, studying complex topics and autonomously conducting in-depth analysis as you work towards progressing into year three. This is an exciting year; you are required to wear lab coats and protective gloves throughout, as you will learn solely through practical lab work. You’ll study functional substrates, bonding and mechanisms and apply knowledge of molecular techniques within the area of gene technology. Students who complete year two are awarded a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Biological & Chemical Sciences.

Modules

  • Mini Project

    In this mini project, you will collate information previously gathered and present it in project form. Taking charge of your own time and learning, you are required to conduct your own experimentation on a biology-based or chemistry-based theory, drawing on numeracy skills to conduct scientific research. In addition, you’ll get an introduction into statistical analysis—a highly desired skill in industry.

  • Organic Chemistry

    At this advanced level, there will be a key focus on learning, comparing and analysing analytical techniques in chemistry and applying them to real-life case studies. You will also be introduced to the fundamentals of inorganic, organic and physical chemistry and electronic structures.

  • Cell and Molecular Biology

    This exciting module is where you get to explore the complexities of genetic engineering, which focuses on manipulating DNA molecules. You are required to perform a transformation experiment in our high specification laboratories, understanding the applications to industry and the health sector as you do so. You will also cover photosynthesis and the animal development of embryos.

  • Advanced Physiology/Pharmacology

    You will begin by exploring the basic anatomy of major physiological systems in the human body. You’ll apply this knowledge to complex interactions that dictate and affect physiological functions and learn basic pharmacological principles.

Overview

Sandwich and placement years give you the opportunity to gain further insight into the industry or career you are seeking to follow. This enables you to contextualise the theoretical models and concepts discussed in the classroom in the workplace. Furthermore, if you choose to take advantage of a placement or sandwich year, this version of the degree will help to increase your employment prospects by acquiring skills and gaining an understanding of what employers expect of graduates.

Overview

In the final year of study, you are encouraged to work autonomously, developing creative, critical and curious thinking to self-learn and prepare for progression into industry. The module complexity increases this year, as you analyse environmental chemistry whilst being introduced to the pathophysiology of a wide range of diseases. Packed with experiments and applied learning, you will spend the majority of your time working within the laboratories, observing and testing clinical signs and symptoms used to diagnose disorders, growth and change. Students who complete year three are awarded a Degree (BSc) in Biological & Chemical Sciences.

  • Pathophysiology of Disease

    This module characterises the aetiology, pathophysiology, clinical investigation and treatment of diseases that make a significant contribution to morbidity and mortality within healthcare. You’ll begin with an overview of pathology, followed by a systems approach to prevalent diseases, including obesity, diabetes, nutritional deficiencies and neurological disorders.

  • Advanced Cell Biology

    At this stage, you will understand eukaryotic cell structure and the complex cellular regulatory processes. Working independently, you will exercise your knowledge on several emerging applications of molecular techniques within the area of gene technology.

  • Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry

    This module cements your specialist knowledge on inorganic, physical and organic chemistry, electronic structure, bonding and periodicity. You’ll accurately examine properties of chemical substances specifically related to s, p and d-block elements. You will finish with the critical analysis of the underlying principles of carbon chemistry and radiation processes.

  • Dissertation

    At this final stage, you will exercise your applied knowledge of small-scale investigations while integrating key principles of project management. You have the opportunity to showcase your skill set by undertaking an independent investigative project, using knowledge of health and safety and ethical procedures to underpin your findings.

  • Health and Disease Issues: You will be introduced to basic pharmacological principles and drugs used to treat a range of diseases and gain a developed understanding and critical analysis of the complex pathophysiology and aetiological causes of a variety of tropical diseases, whilst observing the clinical signs and symptoms used to diagnose these disorders.
  • The Fundamentals Biological and Chemical Sciences: Including biology, chemistry and physiology. You will develop your core understanding within the sciences, with a focus on the application of fundamental scientific principles within analytical industries. You will also develop a critical appreciation of biological and chemical sciences to enable them to develop practical skills in a range of scenarios.
  • Project Management: You will gain an applied knowledge of small-scale investigations, integrating some principles of project management and the associated processes. 
  • Research Methods: Critical analysis, reflection, information searching and experimental design in the biological sciences. Data collection, analysis and presentation.

This course is available as a full-time three year or optional four-year sandwich course, the latter incorporating a work placement or study year in a related field. Alternatively, part-time study is also available and with our Saturday University programme, this course can be completed in as little as three years. Our teaching methods are varied, offering a number of teaching styles to suit the needs of all our students, so in addition to lectures, we also utilise a blended learning approach, including online aspects, workshops and group work.

We also operate an open-door policy, with additional availability via email and our online learning platform, Moodle.

Progression through the modules develops knowledge and skills, including communication (written and oral), study skills, research methods, project management, presentation and career development. We will also encourage you to consider your employability and/or entrepreneurial development.

Unlike traditional institutions, there are no end of year exams. Instead, learning is assessed through coursework and phase tests, which is more reflective of our learning model.

Our teaching methods are varied with a number of teaching styles to suit different students, so in addition to lectures, we also teach via online mediums, workshops and group work.

The learning outcomes of modules, assignments and projects will be clearly stated. Your work will be marked according to how well you achieve these learning outcomes and your final feedback will refer to each outcome, as well as providing an overall percentage grade.

Assessment methods vary and include, practical class and project performance, written practical reports, project thesis, laboratory experiments, tutorial tasks and assessments, which take place at the end of each six-week block.

On completion, you will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamentals of biological and chemical sciences, including cell biology, chemistry and physiology. You will develop a core understanding within the sciences, with applications to industry and the health sector.
  • Develop appropriate research and analysis techniques, alongside the ability to undertake reliable scientific research activities.
  • Operate, lead and collaborate in a team to solve problems of a practical (experimental) nature and to provide appropriate solutions.
  • Apply appropriate presentation and evaluation tools to establish the significance of research data produced. 

Full-time students receive 18 hours of teaching each week.
Classes are split into two categories:
Morning - 9am-1pm
Afternoon - 1:30pm-5:30pm

Part-time students receive 8 hours of teaching each week.
Classes are split into two categories, subject to numbers:
Saturday - 9am-6pm
Tuesday and Thursday - 6pm-10pm

We hold tutorials in groups no larger than 5 every week. These sessions are mandatory and ensure you receive detailed feedback about your work, go into depth on specific topics and have any of your burning questions answered.

Contact time with staff is high and group sizes are kept small. We don’t teach in huge lecture theatres filled with hundreds of students.

Full-time (UK/EU)

For the academic year 2018/19, each six-week block will cost £1,837.50. A full academic year is made up of four of these blocks, so this means that a normal full-time year is £7,350. This covers some of your learning materials, access to the CU Scarborough Library & Learning Services, all your classes and online tutorials. 

Part-time (UK/EU)                                                                  

The part-time course fee is dependent on how many modules you choose to study in an academic year.

Each stage of the qualification (HNC/HND/Degree) will require you to complete four academic blocks. You can study up to four blocks in one academic year or study at a slower pace (usually three academic blocks per year). Please note if you do study at a slower pace you will need to re-enrol to complete your studies in the next academic year.

For the academic year 2018/19, each block for part-time students will cost £1,837.50. Therefore, the total fee per stage of your qualification if completed in the academic year 2018/19 is: £7,350.

Funding

As a full-time student or part-time student resident in the UK or EU, you can apply for a loan to cover the cost of your tuition fees at CU Scarborough from Student Finance England.

International

For the academic year 2018/19, each six-week block will cost £2,675. A full academic year is made up of four of these blocks, so this means that a normal full-time year is £10,700. This covers some of your learning materials, access to the CU Scarborough Library & Learning Services, all your classes and online tutorials.

The tuition fees stated on the course webpage, prospectus and your offer letter will apply for the duration of your course, subject only to changes to the law or government requirement.

Career prospects

With a BSc behind you, your chances of employment are improved and the level at which you enter the job market could mean a higher salary.

On graduation, you will have a portfolio of employability skills across a range of science disciplines giving you an advantage over other candidates.

You could go on to work in a number of different disciplines including studying towards postgraduate qualifications, working within laboratory based industries, technical posts within education or industry, research technician or even teaching in science. The BSc also provides you with a strong set of transferable skills valued by employers.
